I've wratched many games and witnessed emotion-packecompetition. Things get fierce when it concerns your community... high school... and most importantly, your children. I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to San Juan High School and their basketball coach Derek Farr. Its always hard to lose (Heavens knows, weve done it at your hands often enough! I've had sons on those teams as well!). But if you wanted to see the epitome of class, you should've attended the 2A State Tournament semifinal game -San Juan had it. Not only did they battle until the end in the quarter finals (actually past the end, since it went overtime), but they and their coach acted with integrity far beyond the game. Coach Derek Farr took the time to come into Kanabs locker room after the emotional loss to congratulate and wish the Kanab Cowboys luck in the Championship game. His encouraging words touched their Blanding ) Sand all addrasa changea lo P.O. Boa I7f. Utah 84535. Tahe care ofyour sniff(es with medications from Sun Juan Tharmacy fee pos- sessed good sportsmanship, a virtue too often missing in sports competitions. It especially touched the Cowboys that you honored Monte Hawkins who had been injured the previous night, by wearing the headbands on Saturday. I wish wed have been able to have won the state championship, to have given more validation to the fierce San JuanKanab game. It wasnt to be for Kanab this year (I think the San Juan game had them emotionally and physically drained)! But as I told our boys, it s sometimes in the efforts you put forth and your behavior in the process, not always on the final result. San Juan exhibited the true spirit of competitive sports. I hope that in future competitions Kanab can act with the same amount of class. Rural electric associations were invented by the federal government as a socialism-baseprogram to help get power to remote areas, and they continue to enjoy federal subsidy and control. Empire Electric and has power prohas also had power outages, is based consider its bottom line vided under a fixed price contract. It has to just as the City or any other company would. Why would we turn down our only chance to regain local control over this vital service, when we hear so much about how bad big government and outside interests are? We want local control over our roads, economy, tourism, etc., but not our own power system. We want to make sure no income or profits from utilities come back to us? Empire Electric has sent out some information playing on our fears but they would be immune to about maintenance and the changes that might occur in that event. If the city did not get good service from a maintenance contractor, it could get another - and Empire may very well end up providing the maintenance anyway. Why is Empire so eager to hold on to our system - might it be because we are profitable? When people want so many city services and facilities, like skate parks and ski hills, why do they want to prevent the city from getting one of the only means it has of providing those -short of raising taxes? We believe that recipes, Christmas lights, and sporadic dividend checks are not good enough reasons to insist on keeping Empire Electric as our utility. The City Council should trust its instincts and wisdom, and buy our system back. Joseph Wight Leigh Ann Hunt Well keep your bite bright (PG) stars Chevy Chase revenue-generatin- g FREDA ARON NELL DALTON MAXINE DEETER MARY LOU HOGGARD LEO PLATERO GARY Dear Editor: The Monticello City Council says that we should buy back our electric utility, and they have the evidence, numbers and opinion of an independent expert to back them up. Since they were elected to become informed and administer the city for greatest benefit of the residents, we are inolined to believe them. Reading the letters from the opponents of this move, it is clear that most of us know extremely little about this complex economic issue except that 1) we like our hot chocolate from the microwave, and 2) electric lines can be dangerous. Oh, and we also know that 21 years ago, the city was unable to provide and maintain good electric service so the city itself decided to sell, writh a buyout clause in case the situation should change in the future. Seemingly, the City Council did the right thing then - why do some people assume they would do the wrong thing now? This town built its own electric system 80 years ago without federal or outside assistance and can certainly manage the system today, as their letter discusses. The issue really seem to be whether to keep the rural electric association or pursue a decent alternative, which many other communities benefit from. Monticello people seem to have a warm, fuzzy feeling about Empire Electric, yet it has only been our power company F2T?Pn.7i?
