How can we expect the kids to treat each other with respect when the adults dont?" I think that it is a fair Electric. This represents nearly 25 percent of the customer base of the entire system. Who knows how many would have shown up if he meeting was held in a bigger room. question. electric system from Empire Strong public sentiment was expressed that the issue be settled with a binding election. While I understand the emotions behind the sentiment, I oppose an election. Believe it or not but the electrical system purchase is not that big of a deal. Certainly not big enough to overturn our system of representative democracy. We had a chance to vote in November and barely 40 percent of registered voters participated in the municipal election. For better or worse, we elect repre- sentatives and trust them to make the best decision. Dont forget that we live in a small community and have five members of the City Council who are accessible. Construction has begun on an exciting new project to bring high speed, high bandwidth telecommunications infrastructure to the Four Comers area. An information superhighway is literally being constructed from Albu- querque to Grand Junction and Empire Electric is a key player in the project. In fact, according to Dave Eppich of the San Juan Forum, the project would not be taking place at all without the financial support and expertise of Empire Electric. According to Neal Stephens of Empire Electric, La Plata Electric Association of Durango and Empire Electric hold 12.5 of the equity in the project. Possibly more significant is Stephens states that Empire made the investments primarily because no one else was investing in telecommunications infrastructure in the area. This move into the world is also an attempt for Empire to diversify its services and survive the threat of electrical system deregulation. for-pro- fit This represents a significant investment of Empire time and resources and it is not without risk. In fact, two law suits have been filed challenging the legalis ty of rural electric using member-ownfunds to enter the co-op- er world. Stephens states that the project for-pro- fit is just getting started and that there are no current plans to extend the superhighway to Monticello. In fact, Cahonc, Colorado is the closest that the project will come to Monticello. While it sounds like a great project, I think that it is fair to ask Empire how the project will affect the customers in Monticello: customers whose electrical bills were used to make the investments. According to the Citys spreadsheet, the City Telecommunications (TCT) could pay $200,000 a year in which Empire and La Plata debt payment and still clear formed to use the infrastructure another $200,000 in "profits. and deliver telecommunications Jack Young, a member of the services in the Four Comers area.
