The forest system Roosevelt established could not even exist were it not for roads. The sportsmen and women who comprise your Conservation Alliance could not even access the forests and all they provide for the benefit and use of man without roads. There arc many roadless areas on the forest lands that indeed need protection, but that is not what King Klintons Initiative is about. It is designed to close existing roads. It will make wise management, use, preservation, conservation and control impossible. If his proposal passes, then surely the forests will go down in flames. It would be much better if the King" and his proposal go down in flames. Lets honor Teddy Roosevelt by not abusing but using the forests fur that which he and Cod intended. Down with the Roadless Initiative! Sincerely, Joe Lyman Blanding Juan Record, I Saturday Friday February Monday 12 11 14 (PG) starring Robin Williams See 1596 E It 7:00 pm At The MOVIES! MACDONALD D.D.S. Honor Roosevelt by not abusing forests Supernova stars James Spader iPG) stars Sharon Stone Rob Adams I ) This is in response to the letter of Mac Blewer, Wyoming Outdoor Council, suggesting we should honor Teddy Roosevelt by supporting the Roadless Area Initiative. The letter also could lead one to believe, as President, he developed the National Forest system by establishing them as wilderness type preserves. This was not really what Teddy Roosevelt had in mind when, under the guidance of Gifl'ord Pichot, he introduced true conservation principles into the management of the forests. In my studies of principles of conservation 65 years ago the concept was: True conservation is the utilization of the natural resources of the nation to serve the largest number of people for the longest period of time. The United States Forest Reserves were originally established by President Benjamin Harrison in 1891. The nations forests were being used by large conglomerates, accumulating high profits in the making and sale of forestry products in the rapidly expanding development of the nation's cities, farms and other commercial developments. Much of the forested areas were being harvested without providing for regeneration. Teddy Roosevelt became President after the assassination of President William McKinley. The quote of Teddy, contained in the letter: The forest is for use, and its users will decide its future" was a preface to Teddys instructions that the forests should he used by everyone, and just as National Parks, were to have roads, trails and accommodations, within their boundaries, so all people could enjoy their beauty. The conservation principles practiced by the Forest Service was to control fires, provide for new growth, take proper care of the lands for grazing of cattle and sheep as well as the wildlife, allow every person the right to visit, enjoy the beauty and participate in the production of goods from the abundant natural resource provided by our vast forests. The Forest Service has been doing the will of Teddy Roosevelt for nearly a century. I do not believe President Teddy Roosevelt envisioned a wilderness area without roads, trails, suitable camping facilities, the many other accommodations and solitude the citizens of this nation would enjoy. If we would only plan together properly we could have all these things because there is ample room for them in areas wilderness advocates are seeking. For these, and many other accomplishments, I have the greatest admiration, honor and respect for President Teddy Roosevelt. We need more statesmen of his type. Sincerely yours, Darroll P.
