Show PAGE THE ZEPHYRDECEMBER 1995 11 Republican Group Throws Support Behind Big Wilderness Republicans for Environmental Protection (REP), a national grassroots organization, has announced its support for H.R. 1500 and wilderness protection for 5.7 million acres in Utah. "One of REP'S goals is to ensure the preservation and protection of our national parks, forests, wilderness areas, and wildlife refuges, so weve been closely monitoring events in Utah," said Martha Marks, a Republican of the group. county commissioner in Lake County, Illinois, and "I hate to say it, but that state's congressional delegation must not be listening to its constituents, since polls in Utah show such overwhelming support for wilderness. g Public forums, petition drives, and campaigns show that almost of Utah residents want the larger area set aside as wilderness," she co-foun- Nelson's Heating & Refrigeration Moab since 962" 1 "serving letter-writin- three-quarte- rs added. 075 Bowling Alley Lane 1 Says Susan Isom, a REP member from Bountiful whose family has lived in Utah since the 1850s, "Its ironic that our conservative representatives are not interested in conserving one of Utahs and the nation's greatest wilderness treasures. It's also ironic that our predominately Republican state has to rely on Democrats like Maurice Hinchey and Bruce Babbitt to preserve our children's legacy." Warren L. Cates, another REP member from Bountiful, has been a Republican since Barry Goldwatcr headed the GOP, but he is now disillusioned with the party. The positions taken on wilderness preservation by our congressional delegation and our governor show a total disdain for conservation. Utah Republicans appear to be prepared to sell any or all of our natural assets, with no strings attached, said Mr. Gates. As Utahns, said Gloria Laughlin, a REP member form Salt Lake Gty, "we have a unique opportunity to protect one of the most diverse and historical wilderness areas in the country. If our own congressional delegation and governor are not willing to 1 protect Utahs wilderness, then we as citizens must. As a Utah Republican, am ashamed of what we may let happen." REP members arc calling on Republicans in Congress to vote against both H.R. 1745 and S. 884, the Utah politicians' wilderness bills. Although Republicans for Environmental Protection began only a few months ago, it already has members in 23 states, including Utah. Members are moderate and conservative Republicans from around the country who want to conserve, not squander, America's natural heritage. One of their goals is to let COP leaders know that Republicans support protection of air, water, wetlands, wildlife, endangered species, and public lands. Another Month, Another Andalex Protest SUWA is challenging the approval by the Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining (UDOCM) of the permit application package for the controversial Smoky Hollow coal mine proposed by Andalex Resources on the Kaiparowits Plateau. Andalex Resources is proposing a 25,000 acre coal mine in the heart of the Utah Wilderness Coalition's 650,000 acre Kaiparowits wilderness. The 3 million tons of coal which Andalex intends to mine on an annual basis for the next forty years will be trucked, trained, and shipped to Pacific Rim nations. Andalex Resources cleared the first major hurdle in their efforts to open southern Utah's Kaiparowits coal field on October 12, 1995 when the UDOGM approved the Dutch-owne- d company's permit application package. SUWA's protest has been filed with the Board of Oil, Gas and Mining which oversees implementation of the coal regulatory program by the Division. SUWA is challenging the UDOGM's determination for several reasons. SUWA is arguing that UDOGM's approval inappropriately ignores more than half of the proposed coal mine, plus access roads and power lines. Additionally, SUWA alleges that the Andalcx's environmental studies are based on outdated and incomplete research almost two decades old. Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance U'l 11' l'ji'I. According to an application filed with the Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining, oil the company is proposing the wildcat well on school trust lands 42 miles southeast of Escalante. Rangeland Petroleum states on the application that they would like their proposed drilling program to be kept confidential. Although details are sketchy, the well would mean lights, big trucks, noise, and other disturbing things for an area that could probably do just fine without such "improvements." Just think if they strike it big, perhaps we'll see oil pipelines going down the historic Hole in the Rock leading to oil tankers which will travel the waters of Lake Fowcll to an oil port in Page, Arizona. ANOTHER v . Another Cow Project Near Labyrinth BLM is proposing two rock reservoirs, a 5000 gallon water storage tank, 600 feet of buried pipeline, and two water troughs inside the proposed Labyrinth Canyon wilderness area. Although this could relieve the hammering that Tenmile Canyon receives from excessive livestock use, this S32,000 publicly-funde- d project is proposed in the numbers area.
