Show THE ZEPHYR APRIL 1992 campaign is carried out this summer, the current commission would have the option of either putting it to a vote in November, or waiting until as late as 1994. Supporters of the change realize that the reaction of the commission will have a major effect on the success or failure of the effort. If commissioners can be convinced that the change is good, or at least politically pressured into agreeing to it the would move forward campaign easily. But if commissioners oppose it, a major political fight will ensue. For that reason, leaden of the campaign have moved to downplay criticism of the current county leadership, and have sought to involve much wider layers of the population than just those angry at the commission. And so far, they have succeeded, with support for at least looking into a change cutting across traditional political divisions. But whatever happens, if the petition drive moves forward or flounders in the flurry of tourist season activity, there are mare people watching foe actions of county government than in years.
