Show PAGE 19 THE ZEPHYR APRIL 1992 2) State Lands (the inheritance of those very same Utah school children) would no longer have to be liquidated because the children's parents did not want to pay for their kids' diirHna, 3) Jeepers, hikers, bikers, and all citizens would still be able to enjoy the lands they have used in the past. The lands would become true public lands through this process. 4) The transient room sales tax would no longer be spent on advertising and promoting Utah. Come on we don't need any more promotion. We have been discovered and tourism will be increasing faster than we can handle even if we started a NEGATIVE advertising campaign. 5) Employees of the State Division of Lands and of the various Travel Councils would be free to find new jobs that would be of benefit to society, and would no longer have to fed guilty about the harm they are doing to their communities. To accomplish the above, we'd only have to change a couple of state laws. When we're being hurt by bad laws, we simply have to begin the process of changing those laws. The main change would be to foe grotesque law that mandates that most of the transient room tax be spent an so that a county can choose how to spend this tax, so that promotion. This might be counties that are not yet "blessed" with the tourism that Moab has, can still advertise away their quality of life as we have done here in Grand County. They might even listen to you if you told them you didn't want to have your Jeep trails dosed down by NO TRESPASSING signs and converted into subdivisions and curio shops. (Jeep dubers tell me that every Jeep Safari trail crosses some state land.) The County Commissioners rarely listen to other members of our community. COMMUNITY BUSINESS PE0PLE...5ince you deal with the one thing our Commissioners respect (money), sometimes they will listen to you. Tell them that your businesses will be hurt if they continue to trash our rivers, our Jeep and bike trails, and our canyons. Tell them it makes more sense to have the businesses and people located in the central Moab vicinity rather than scattered all around the county. Let's fill the new RV parks and motels being built in and around Moab before we start polluting the countryside with additional ones. It's simply time for the Moab business community to realize that it's just good business sense to begin protecting the most important business asset that Grand County possesses. If you have no idea what is actually at stake (I realize that most business owners are struggling to keep their businesses going), let's arrange some way to talk about it I know it seems that Moab is surrounded by public land that can't be sold and trashed, but this is NOT true. Of course, after the recent TraveLCoundl fiasco, it's apparent your Commissioners don't listen to you very well either. Oh, welL... THE REST OF US...A dtizens group has formed to look into the possibility of increasing the number of commissioners on the commission in the hopes that this would improve the community representation on foe commission. If this sounds good to you, they're looking for help in expanding the number of seats on the commission. Another small group of us is forming a local land trust that might be able to raise funds to purchase some of these lands (for human use) if they are put on the market again. A land trust could protect Jeep, biking, and hiking trails as wells canyons, arches, or scenery. If this approach appeals to you, get in touch with me to find out how you could help. Or you could try talking to your Commissioners. an non-partis- - : ' - ; - ...i ' - 26 (True elegance) This home has all of the traditional elements of the English Tudor manor house. 3 bedrooms, living room, familyroom, dinning room, office, 3 bathrooms, 2 car garage, over 3200 sq. ft. of living area.
