SENATOR SUPPLIED THE STAMPS caller evidently thought it was part bof his duty the story told of hannibal in the sunday herald of june 11 recalls to my mind a rather pleasant plea bant incident in connection with mr ham alln I 1 was a doorkeeper in the united states senate chamber and having received my appointment through mr I 1 felt it a pleasure to render S him any service in my power one day during the last session of the senate in which mr hamlan served I 1 was standing near one of the doors leading into the chamber when a smartly dressed lady appeared and said she desired to see senator I 1 volunteered to take her T card to the senator mr was so much engage dr that he asked me to inquire what the lady desired I 1 delivered the mes sage and said I 1 would take any word to him that she had to send she de opened a handbag and took out two packages of e and said will you please a senator if he will frank these for me when I 1 delivered the mr laid the package on his desk and said who Is this lady I 1 dont know her I 1 asked shall I 1 return thazel to her he said no and then opened hie j desk and handed me a sheet of post age stamps saying put one on each envelope and return them to the lady with my compliments on returning to the lady I 1 gave her the package of stamped envelopes and she ret red without a word of thanks or even a smile boston her aid
