old jokes take best it must be very discouraging to the men who write comedy and es specially ally to the men who write the 11 brettos of the musical comedies to realize that the old jokes are the ones that invariably get the laugh said the veteran theatergoer I 1 have frequently observed this state of affairs the original humor that the author places in the mouths of his characters never seems to appeal to an audience like the moss grown jests that are evidently interpolated in fact the older a joke is the more wel come it seems to be I 1 suppose its on the principle that old friends are best I 1 attended a performance the other evening that was full of laughs and most of the lines were original but the thing that struck the audience as being the funniest bit in the show was when the principal comedian drinks champagne for the first time makes a and says it feels just like your foot was asleep then the people howled and nearly tell out of their seats from sheer force of merriment and yet venture to say the joke it you can call it a joke is at least twenty one years old it just goes to show that familiarity doean doesn t always breed contempt
