SHOT lieutenant IN THE BACK regular army off Is killed while assisting in maneuvers at el reno oklahoma HE DIED WHERE HE PELL foul play is suspected and a rigid Examina ton has been begun to discover culprit oklahoma city okla A special to the times journal from el reno okia says lieutenant E L chapman stationed at fort keno was shot in the back thursday while assisting in the man beuvers of six companies in a running fight and instantly 1 llred early in the morning six companies of infantry were called out tor field maneuvers in the presence of brigadier general J M lee whose headquarters are at san antonio while engaged in a run ning fight across the prairie north west at town lieutenant chapman who was acting as the battalion adi autant received shot brorn a ball carti ridge fired from the companies oppose ing him he died where he tell foul play la suspected and a rigid examination Is being instituted to determine if possible the person who alred the shot at the present time no one in the six companies engaged can throw any light on the subject there appears to be a general am pres slon at the post that the cartridge was used purposely and that it was intended for another regimental officer in the party instead of for lieutenant chapman it Is reported here that colonel bailey of the infantry in general Is supposed to be the officer referred to but no evidence on this point it any has been found Is given out nor can the presumed mo ive be ascertained there Is corn reticence among the officers at the tort chapman received his commission in 1901 he was JO years of ago
