Show America’s Cup could end up high and dry Hilmer Anderson By - SAN DIEGO big questions Two (UPI) surround this week's America's Cup: How badly will skipper Dennis Conner beat New Zealand on the water? Will he lose the cup a second time anyway? The race that began with a young lawyer’s review of the America’s Cup rules probably will end with yet another court hearing after the races are concluded New Zealand’s Mercury Bay Boating Club will challenge the San Diego Yacht Club for the series cup in a scheduled off San Diego Sept 7 9 and 11 The gleaming white New Zealand a sloop manned by a crew of 40 is expected to lose and lose badly to Dennis Conner and best-of-thr- 133-fo- his 60-fo- ot wing-sa- ot il catamaran The New Zealanders are also expected to drag the matter back before New York Court Justice C Supreme Beauchamp Ciparick to argue the Americans violated the spirit of the America’s Cup’s Deed of Gift by failing to meet them in a “match” between more similar yachts Ciparick could order the cup forfeited to New Zealand The Americans are still fuming about the unexpected challenge handed them last summer by New Zealand's Michael Fay The Kiwis are furious about San Diego’s subsequent plan to meet the challenge in a catamaran and insist they will take the matter to court as soon as the races are over “Our position has been on record since the first of December when the defenders announced they would consider racing in a multihull” Fay said last week New Zealand has no intention of not having it'sprotest heard” The New Zealanders and just about everyone in international yachting agree a catamaran’s lighter design makes it more than a match for any monohull in terms of speed and maneuverability and that racing the two boats amounts to comparing apples and oranges On the other side of the bay is the San Diego group led by Sail America Foundation an organization that handled Conner’s winning 1987 campaign in Fremantle Australia and is managing the cup defense for theSDYC Last summer Sail America anticipated plans for a 1991 yachts that regatta in would attract a record 20 synj612 billion dicates and into the San Siump That was about the time when Fay stopped by for lunch at the club and handed an official challenge for a race in waterline yachts in 1968 to a flabbergasted Commodore Fred Frey In response Sail America announced its plan for a catamaran that would squash Fay and allow San Diego to hold its 1991 regatta “Michael Fay has not earned the right to sail for the America's Cup because he has refused to face (men competition” Conner saul “If he is slow it may be because he really isn’t even the best challenger for the cup" Computer projections by Sail Magazine predict Stars ft Stripes will heat New Zealand by at least an hour on both the triangular course and windward-leewar- d the course (20 miles into the winds and 20 miles back) but the actual margain of victory is 12-me-ter 90-fo- ot 12-me-ter - For the US Olympic men’s basketball team everything appears to be falling into place The players are communicating learning new positions and — especially in the case of the two Charles Smiths — receiving pants that LOS ANGELES fit After Team USA practiced against Athletes in Action Friday at El Segundo High School Coach John Thompson said his squad will leave today for Hong Kong It will remain of workouts there for two before making tL final leg of the journey to Seoul “Going into this thing we’re not guaranteeing anything” Thompson said when asked about his team’s chances “I don’t think we have gold-med- al reached the stage where we feel we can go into Seoul and stand on the first step “That’s why we’ve been two times a day Sracticing working very hard The anxiety is picking up We e realize we have to this thing as quickly as we fine-tun- possibly can” Charles Smith — the forward from University of Pittsburgh with the middle initial “D” — laid that com munication on the court is improving with each practice ‘The strongest thing is we're meshing together as a unit” he said “We’re really at the point where everybody knows how each individual plays We know the assets and the weaknesses of each player” Communication between player and tailor seems to be getting better as well Friday t Stars and Stripes catamaran in San Diego Bay 40-mi- le Journal at 1 752-245- Now In flock VALLEY METALS INC 1 10th Woit Isf North iMMiMCiusma CiU Idaho shadowed by possible WELL CASING iow Call your carrier or The Herald 752-212- USED PIPE AND Water Conditioning lontal Delivery Problems?
