The year-roun- d year-roun- d Kathleen Voth Hyrum 'Thatcher situation' To the editor: 1 appreciate the opportunity of using this means of communication to provide some background to interested citizens of Cache Valley concerning the “Thatcher situation' in regards to planning and zoning in the county Those who have followed this “problem" know that the Thatchers have had a continuing concern with the county master plan which designates the land on which they have developed their growing business as “agricultural' instead of "commericaL" This is the basis of the problem Let me state at the outset that I am well acquainted with two cf the Thatcher family members I regard them highiy and feel they have a desirable business for our valley — the type of business enterprise we seek and need here in the county What is perplexing to me is that all during the time they have developed their business on designated agricultural land they have owned prime property in the commercial portion cf Lozan They still own this property When I asked the Tnatcher brothers why they didn’t plan sow to expand their business to the commercial location they stated “W like to walk to work go home for lunch" etc — also stating that their business could well expand m the future to more than 109 employees up from the current number of S3 — that being the maximum allowed under their current excep tion to the conditional use permit ) Over the years the Thatcher family has developed their business with a total of 36 personal appearances requesting exceptions to the conditional use permits These appearances have been before both the planning and zoning commission and the county commission itself Their business has grown to where it is currently marketed in 48 states and Canada It business I see is no longer a small family-typ- e the granting of further exceptions to the master plan as setting a basic precedence here in the valley Certainly we want and need more economic development — as long as the development is desirable and contributes to the quality of life here in the valley However if we allow anyone who wants to develop a business to do so “anywhere" what happens to this quality of life? Large trucks coming and going from warehouses parking and traffic problems for retail sales parking for employees water sewer etc Surely these problems must be considered 1 have been contacted by many neighbors of the Thatchers Neighbors who regard them individually as fine members of the community but neighbors who are concerned about their own property values their own desires for rural farm and agricultural-typ- e living and who have real concerns for safety utilities and other factors mentioned above 1 of course will abide by the decisions of the majority of those elected and selected to consider planning and zoning problems However as one charged with this responsibility I cannot in good faith for the future of valley land particularly for the concerns of the neighbors of the Thatcher family approve any expansion plans from current business operations I strongly believe that by moving retail sales located for Sew Easy to a commercial location — an increase in sales w ould be realized Also that by moving the expanded wholesale and warehousing enterprise to land already owned by the Thatchers (and properly zoned comm erica’ this continuing problem will be solved to the satisfaction of all and full future expansion can take place on an unlimited basis com-meric- al more-centrall- y Jay A Monson 10:30-2:3pm all of the students are at schooL The classes will be larger in number This allows for the core classes to be smaller In 0 number Teachers if they choose are able to work two hours longer a day which would give them extra income Shifting the children this way helps to alleviate the overcrowding by as much as 20 percent which would be the same as the d program that is being presented If Lincoln chooses this only the fourth and fifth grades would have to be converted at this time to solve the overcrowding problem The remaining grades could stay as they are This program could be implemented without the added cost of air conditioning extra busing d wages for cooks and the other costs d needed to go Meetings will be held on Jan 7 8 9 to discuss possible solutions Some options could have a strong impact on your family life Be sure you study all the facts before you vote year-roun- year-roun- year-roun- Sherleen Cooper Hyrum Shari Miller Hyrum Thanks To the editor: I want to thank all of the people w ho made our stay at the hospital on Christmas Eve more enjoyable Especially the staff in the ICU unit where my husband was given excellent care following his heart attack We are so blessed to have such excellent doctors and nurses in Cache Valley Even Mr and Mrs Santa Claus came to visit us It was a long day especially for our granddaughter who was anxious for her grandpa to get better and to have Christmas continue as usuaL So thank you Mr and Mrs Glen Johnson who have for years been bringing happiness to those who have had to spend Christmas in the hospital There really is a Santa Gaus and more than that our prayers have been answered Thanks again to all of our family and friends and dear neighbors GeoJessen River Heights county commissioner JacaeLee Millville Lincoln School To the Freedom of choice editor: parents cf children attending Lincoln Elementary me are faced with the problem cf As education will soon overcrowding be presented to the patrons of Lincoln as an option to solve this problem There is another option called “extended day" which has been examinee hzt allows our h children to stay wi& the tratLonal Year-roun- d nine-mont- school year In tins program the two groups Group A students are divided into attends school from 8:30 sm to 2:30 pxn Group B arrives at 10:39 am and is dismissec at 4:30 pm From 8:30 to 10:30 am Group A w2 be involved in their core classes (math reading penmanship) and from 10:39 am to 2:39 pm they are m their life science courses (science art mus:c physical education etc) Group B attends their life science courses from 20:59 am to 2:39 pm and then are in 0 them core classes from pm From 2:39-4:3- To the editor: LM Jensen: I found your letter interesting! You made some valid points I as very interested in one's right to freedom of choice Unde Sam should take interest in our national defense and the best interest of the U S if that can be defined To govern our TVs our bedrooms what e read or what we watch is not really in our best interest! To threaten us with fines or whatever because we refuse to buckle up is not in our best interest! If I would of been wearing a seat belt when I was in my car accident that would of been a strapping of myself to my coffin But if 1 hadn't been drinking and driving I might not of had to lire in the anguish 1 have lived is tie past 15 years You can argue until you turn various colors but our own destiny should be controlled by ns A government is to lead us not shackle us! Isn't it a shame the government cannot discern the difference! David G Buck Logan Tax justice To the editor: We have heard a lot about tax reform lately but how many of us have read the report of the Citizens for Tax Justice? They recently studied annual reports of 275 major corporations and found that 50 of them reported profits totalling $56 billion How much tax did they pay: Nothing! Not only that but they got refunds worth S24 billion This makes their tax rate a minus 42 percent How does this rate compare with yours? Just one corpnration General Electric reThey ported 865 billion in profits from 1981-8not only paid no taxes but received tax refunds of 8283 million What kind of system gives “refunds" when no taxes have been paid? Sen John Kerry investigated the IRS jungle and discovered that S122 billion will be lost to the US Treasury this year alone because of tax “loopholes" to corporations It appears that for every dollar a corporation pays in taxes it claims 8169 in tax "breaks" 3 This kind of money could wipe out the federal budget deficit is just two years w ithout sacrificing any public service much-talked-abo- programs Is 1983 alone there w ere 9000 taxpayers with annual incomes of over 8250000 That should have brought in plenty of bucks to the Treasury right? Wrong! Not one of them paid even a dime How dc they do it? Tax “shelters” that only the wealthy can afford Have you had a tax break lately? Four years ago when we saw a big tax reduction who was i: that laughed all the way to the bask? The people is the 93 percent tax bracket that's who They were able to keep almost twice as much when their tax rates were reduced to 50 percent Now the president wants to reduce top bracket to only 35 percent It is certainly going to help the president’s Cabinet for they are all millionaires but w hat about us poor peons?
