| Show The Herald Journal Logan Utah Sunday January 5 1986—19 Young Sooners may have only just begun MIAMI (UPI) — The Oklahoma Sooners captured the national football championship a year or two ahead of schedule The Big Eight Sooners were voted their fifth national title by the UPI Board of Coaches this week after their 2510 victory over Penn State in the Orange Bowl Penn State entered the New Year’s Day game as No 1 and Oklahoma No 2 Jackson caught 22 passes in his sophomore year including seven of 40 yards or more and touchdown capped his season with a pass from Holieway against the Nittany Lions Oklahoma ranked third in the nation in rushing and there wasn't a senior in the offensive backfield Holieway's backup Eric Mitchel was also a freshman Carr’s backup Leon Perry another freshman and halfbacks Spencer Tillman a junior Collins and Damon Stell sophomores in addition to Stafford Carr rushed for 148 yards including a touchdown against Penn State It was his third day of the season Holieway also had four games and Mitchel and Perry one apiece "I don't think there’s any team in college football that has gone as far as we have with the youth at the key skill positions” Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer said "I don't think a freshman backfield has ever done that and that’s basically what we did It's remarkable” Oklahoma will graduate three offensive linemen who started in the Orange Bowl But two of them center Ric Uhles and guard Paul 71-ya- rd The Sooners finished the 1985 season with an 11-- 1 record and numbered six bowl teams among their victims:- Penn State Nebraska (Fiesta) Oklahoma State (Gator) Texas (Bluebonnet) Colorado (Freedom) and Minnesota (Independence) But achievement preceded experience at Oklahoma The Sooners will lose only seven seniors off their 1985 team Of the 65 players Oklahoma took to Miami for the season finale 20 were freshmen and 23 were sophomores And they didn’t attend the Orange Bowl as g - mores Keith Jackson at tight end Mark Hutson at guard Lydell Carr and Patrick Collins at running back Darrell Reed at defensive end Brian Bosworth at linebacker and Ricky Dixon at safety Holieway Phillips Jackson Reed and g Bosworth were all Eight picks last season with Bosworth also earning first-teahonors and the Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker He capped his spectacular sophomore season with a performance against Penn State Holieway was the leading rusher and Jackson the leading receiver on the 1985 Sooners All-Bi- m ca window-dressin- Freshmen quarterback Jamelle Holieway halfback Anthony Stafford offensive tackle Anthony Phillips and cornerback Derrick White all started against Penn State as did sopho- - 61-ya- rd 100-yar- d 100-yar- d Ferrer became starters when injuries cut down center Travis Simpson and tackle Greg Johnson Both Simpson and the Johnson return in 1986 Oklahoma will also lose three starters off the defense: Lombardi nation’s No g nose tackle Tony Casillas three-tim- e g Eight end Kevin Murphy and tackle Jeff Tupper But Paul Migliazzo and Dante Jones return along with Bosworth to comprise what Switzer calls the best linebacking corps he has had in his tenure at Oklahoma Juniors Sonny Brown and Lydell Glenn return along with Dixon and White from a 1985 secondary that led the nation in pass defense Place-kickTim Lashar who led Oklahoma in scoring with 88 points and set an Orange Bowl record with four field goals against Penn State also returns along with punter Mikp Winchester for their senior seasons in 1986 "We lose two great players off our defense in Casillas and Murphy" Switzer said “but we'll be good on defense again When we get our center (Simpson) and tackle (Johnson) back we'll be better on offense mid-seas- 303-pou- Trophy-winnin- All-Bi- 13-ye-ar er Texas turns to Pain ter - AUSTIN (UPI) Dwain who helped fashion explosive offenses at UCLA Brigham Young and Georgia Tech has been hired to direct the offense at Texas as Longhorns Coach Fred Akers began to shake up his staff Akers apparently under fire after losing the Southwest Conference title to Texas A&M Thanksgiving and to Air Force in the Bluebonnet Bowl fired four assistants Friday Two other coaches had resigned from the staff earlier The appointment of Painter as offensive coordinator was made late Friday afternoon Painter is credited with helping g establish offenses at UCLA and Brigham Young before becoming an assistant at Georgia Tech in 1982 Painter Painter jp&VV1- tii'lliHtH-itiilfitili- 'flill'iilllllliilmjiih!
