Show Day Care Center Gets Building By ORA PETERSEN President LaRue's Day Care Center For Exceptional Children For many of the mentally mentally men men- tally retarded children and adults in Utah the day care and training center is the open door to happiness providing them with the opportunity to grow to tobe tobe tobe be loved to have patient understanding understanding under under- standing to be accepted and to develop their abilities For many years years' the Utah State Training School at American Fork was the only facility in Utah designed to serve the mentally mentally mentally men men- tally retarded Equipped to handle handle handle han han- dle fewer than 10 of the retarded retarded retarded re re- re- re this school has always had a long waiting list With these facts in mind and realizing that many retarded and handicapped children and adults thrive best in home living situa situations augmented by special daytime daytime daytime day day- time services parents parents' organized the first Day Care and Training Center in Utah in 1956 They were encouraged and helped by by the few professional people in the field Today there are 19 such recognized recognized day care and training centers centers cen cen- in Utah each one started by parent groups and are now supported supported supported sup sup- ported by parent tuition local fund drives contributions and nd state agencies Under supervision supervision supervision sion of the Utah State Department Department Depart Depart- ment of Welfare in cooperation with the Departments of Health and Education the Governors Governor's Advisory Committee profit non-profit day care and training centers are now largely staffed by qualified qualified qualified directors and teachers The parents civic leaders and professional professional pro pro- people comprise the boards of directors of each day daycare daycare daycare care center Sanpete County's Day Care Center for Exceptional Children incorporated under the name of LaRue's Day Care Center for Exceptional Children The board of directors met Friday Feb 17 at Ephraim with Mrs Irene Elggren Elggren Elg Elg- gren of Salt Lake City of the Department of Welfare of Utah to gain her approval for the purchase purchase pur pur- chase of a building to house the Day Care Center started almost two years ago for the training of the mentally handicapped children of this county The building is the property of Mrs Hyrum Paulsen North Second East in Ephraim located located located loca loca- ted 1 1 V 2 blocks north of Snow Col Col- lege It has been a store and will fit perfectly the centers center's needs when it is finished |
