Show Wednesday, September IS, 1374 Page 2 CITY 1- -80 CITY COUNCIL ABEHDA DEDICATION A FORDS WAS NOT A BETTER IDEA He had it and he lost it. The he is President Gerald Ford and the it is the trust and confidence of the American people. Mr. Ford was off to a very auspicious start. His promises of candor and openness were being corroborated by his actions and demeanor. And then the bombshell. By granting a full, free, and absolute pardon to former President Nixon, Mr. Ford dealt a severe blow to his credibility while firmly establishing the existence of a double standard of justice. First Spiro Agnew admitted he willfully disobeyed the law. He was slapped on the wrist and told not to do it again. Then the other half of the dynamic duo, Mr. Law and Order Nixon, is forced to resign from office for conduct unbecoming a president. With the evidence weighing heavily against him, Mr. Nixon is absolved by his successor before he is even brought to trial. Mr. Ford acted on the grounds that only he could write an ending to the sordid Watergate affair. Thus, the two highest officials in the land, upon whom this nation had conferred its collective trust, have perpetrated criminal offenses and yet the corresponding retribution has not and will not be administered. We think President Ford errs mightily in assuming he has lowered the curtain and concluded the final act of the Watergate tragedy. Mr. Nixon is still subject to subpoenas concerning the trials of Messrs. Ehrlichman, Haldeman, and Mitchell. It is a rather pathetic system of justice that may allow these men to go to jail, if convicted, while the man who gave the orders and who may provide damning evidence against them sits smugly in a vast estate which has been paid for by the American public. And who is to say what criminal actions attributable to the former chief executive might be disclosed in the days to come. The White House tape which revealed Mr. Nixons attempt to thwart an F.B.I. investigation, and which led directly to his resignation, is only one of 64 subpoenaed tapes that were described by the White House as being unrelated to Watergate. The sole redeeming value of a mistake is that we may learn by it. Mr. Ford is apparently unaware of this fact. In his early addresses, our new president stated in no uncertain terms that he would be a president of the people, for the people, by the people; a president who would, above all else, be subservient to the public interest. Mr. Nixons fatal flaw was his belief that what was best for him was synonymous with what was best for America. Now Mr. Ford has pardoned Mr. Nixon saying he felt it was the correct course of action, all the while knowing the American public would, as he had previously stated, not stand for it. The events of the past days and months seem to invalidate the foundation of American jurisprudence that all men are equal before the law. And could it be that the species of American known as the dedicated public servant is near extinction. At AM on Monday, September 23rd, the Park City and Salt Lake City Chambers of Commerce, in cooperation with the Utah State Department of Highways, will be holding a dedication 11 ceremony marking the completion of interstate Highway 80 over Parleys Summit.
