"He is the outstanding em- pirical authority on massive insulation in the country. Olson is shy and reluctant to publicize his process since he lacks academic credentials, but his process sure works." vanFrank and Olson recently set out to prove the value of insulation on a national scale, applying to the Brookhaven National Laboratories program to study homes. energy-efficiesolicited Brookhaven plans for the homes from qualified companies in an nt ERDA-sponsore- investiga- d tion of fuel savings in singlefamily dwellings. Totally electric Olson says his method of construction emphasizes proper orientation, limiting windows and doors to less than 20 percent of total outside wall space, and eliminating or reducing windows on the north wall of the home. Olson uses cellulose. This method relies upon shielding the home from exterior climates, Olson says. "Complicated and expensive generators and batteries are unnecessary when insulation docs the job," he says. Brookhaven apparently finds some validity in his argument. "The only portion of con- struction not profiting from this system is the culinary water heater," Olson says. All other facets of heating realize savings in this type construction." Olson says Brookhaven s study is a chance for him to authenticate his findings on insulation and fuel savings. The participants in the program are expected to be announced early in October. Twenty proposals met the Aug. 23 deadline and are currently under technical review by a Brookhaven staff of architects and engineers. Of the twenty applications, one or more will be accepted for testing in actual wide, construction. 20-ye- ar Brookhaven contract specialist A.J. Salvo says a home (or several homes, depending on how many proposals are accepted) will be constructed at the Brookhaven site in Upton, L.I., and monitored for a year to determine energy efficiency. "Model homes will be built with instrumentation to monitor natural thermal storage," Salvo explains. "The investigations hope to prove and document methods of fuel savings to be available to homeowners. Construction of the homes would begin next summer. i A first for homeowners Salvo says many studies have been made to verify energy savings in commercial construction, but homeowners have never participated in such a program. Choosing methods of fuel savings is merely the first step in the program. Salvo says. The proposals describe types of building designs and specific approaches to achieve energy reduction. After selecting the company or companies who will participate in the study, the groups will be allotted time to design the home itself.
