According to Laird Larson, landscape architect for Utah Department of Transportation, the department is planting trees along 1.5 miles of highway between 9th West and Redwood Rd. In addition, workers are transplanting trees along Interstate 80 near 5300 South. Larson said the contract for the former project was signed in September, 1976, adding, It would take more water to keep them (the trees) in planters than it would to put them in the ground." Larson said the project, cluding installation of irrigation and plant materials, cost $195,000. R.C. Jones & Co. is in- expected to complete the project by May. He estimated the Only at Walker Bank o o total job would use as much water as two average homes. "The irrigation systems is designed to use as little water as possible," he explained. The other project, transplanting trees near 5300 South, resulted from a grading job being done behind the State Office Building. They were cleaning up back there, and we decided to transplant the trees rather than tear them He down," Larsen said. added after the trees are established they will not need to be watered.
