Merrill noted. There arc the obvious benefits such as fuel conservation and avoiding peak traffic hours, but the best aspect of the short week is that all the employees like it. The enthusiasm was illustrated at a employee recent meeting at which only five of the companys 361 employees opted for the regular work schedule. National trends have also shown a shorter work week produces a lower turnover rate and a higher number of unsolicited applications. Although Beehive doesnt have specific figures, Merrill definitely believes it is an incentive to join the company and gives the worker something to think about before changing jobs. We are a growth company, so its hard to say if the number of applications is because of the industry, the benefits, or both, but our employees are dedicated and turnover is minimal." Merrill said. The 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. schedule has a few disadvantages that Merrill said both workers and management must consider. "If there are two workers in a household and they commute together, the longer day can present both an inconvenience and an economic hardship that they must work around." Management too must consider that federal labor guidelines require time and a half for work on government contracts over eight hours per day, even though it is not more than 40 hours per week. This consideration may take on new light, however, since President Carter tried the same method to conserve fuel by requiring federal agencies to work a ten hour day, and found federal law requires an overtime payment to federal employees. Employee efficiency is not negatively affected by the longer work day. Merrill explained the new worker adjusts to the longer day, just as they adjust to a new work environment and routine. "Its all a matter of getting used to it and knowing that a three day retreat awaits you," Merrill added. Customers and shipping people adjust too, Merrill said. The phones are handled on a five day arrangement with a rotating schedule, but business is really conducted Monday through Thursday. ULAUO mvtmoassm o Advertise in the Review.
