Show Dugway Proving Ground, Friday, Feb. 10, 1967 Medical Self Help And Your Safety DttMYlNG "f Ifr Medical Self Help or first aid, as many of us know the term, is defined as the immediate and temporary care given the victim of an accident or sudden illness until the services of a physician can Ire obtained. This training is a valuable home, work and community resource at all times. SUCH TRAINING instills safety consciousness, thus helping the individual prevent accidents and care for himself, his fellow workers, and his immediate family when accidents do occur. It is also valualde in any kind of disaster. Moreover in the event of nuclear attack, survival may well depend upon what each person does for himself, his family and his neighliors during the first critical hours following such an attack. Because a ' vital need for this training exists, a Medical Self Help training program was started at Dugway Proving Ground on January 9. The immediate goal of this initial Medical Self Help training is to instruct and qualify at least ten per cent of the personnel at this installation. The long range goal at Dugway is to qualify and train a minimum of 33 per ceiit of the personnel and, if possible, nearer 1(X) per cent, to include dependents residing on post. MEDICAL SELF HELP (first aid) was defined in the first paragraph; however, first aid commences with the steadying effect upon the stricken person when he realizes that competent hands will help him. First aid is more than a dressing or a splint. First, it is valuable to the individual - it enables uiin to give proper immediate care to his own injuries and it also helps the individual by developing his safety consciousness. Other values are the assistance which may lie rendered in emergencies and the important role played by first aid in civil defense preparedness. ALL PERSONNEL should avail themselves of the opportunity to learn the techniques of the Medical Self Help program. Remember! The car wash will have soft water for customers, removing much of the salt content which is present in Dugways natural water supply.
