(ANF) War has always been a spur to invention. World War I gave birth to the tank. World War II produced radar. The war in Vietnam is no different except that some new products which would have taken years to go from laboratory to battlefield now often take only weeks. Steel-platshoes, rocket-bearin- g helicopters and leech ed repellent have all made their appearance on the battlefield only a few months after the need for them was signalled from Saigon. Much of the credit for this inventive expressway lies with the Limited War Labo-ratory. Under the command of Col Robert McEvoy, the lab is at located Aberd- een Prov- ing Ground. It is an of agency Lt Gen Austin Betts W. Off- ice of Research and Development. The laboratorys small group of about 150 scientists and engineers have developed dozens of remarkable products for Vietnam helplatforms for tree-to- p icopter landings, an odorless leech repellent which is effecr'' tive for 12 hours, a which tells helicopter pilots where Viet Cong riflemen are hiding. "shot-detecto- The laboratory maintains this rapid rate of discovery with two expedients. First, s scientist from the laboratory constantly roams Vietnam searching for new ideas. Out of his interviews . with soldiers and rides in a rice paddy helicopters view of limited war come a stream of sketches, ideas and memos which flow into the laboratory. Second, a process railed GENI an acronyn for Generation of New Ideas gives each Lab scientist $2,000 in expense money and 90 days to develop a promising idea into a product with no questions asked about its scientific feasibility. At the end of 90 days, a board of scientists decides whether the idea will ripen to fulfillment or be placed in a file which is regularly reviewed for of older new applications ideas. No matter how the product is developed, it is tested by troops first at Aberdeen Proving Ground and then in the swamps and jungles of Vietnam. Only after a prototype meets the tough test of combat does it leave the Limited War Lab ready for procurement by the Army. An exciting crucible of ideas, it is rated by one of the labs scientists as "the most challenging place that Ive ever worked in. Scientific and technical people interested in employment by the laboratory should write: Limited War Laboratory, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. McKee of Farmington, N.M., a crew chief with the 1st Air Cav Division. He learned in no time flat. His chopper was taking off from an assault landing tone when it was raked by enemy fire, knocking the pilot unconscious. The got the craft airborne and headed back toward its base at Plei Me, then he, too, blacked out. Hundreds of feet in the air, a battle raging below, and McKee was on his own. Slipping behind the controls, he began a aolo flight "strictly by ear." With other Hueys flying escort for the novice, he made it to Plei Me without a hitch even though the crafts radio and its "power steering co-pil-ot 25-mi- le hydraulic system were shot out THE ARMYS only sctive Signal Brigade has been created at " Son Nhut It is made up of all the Signal Corps units in . .i.nam that were not organic or attached to other units.
