The dissolving of copper minerals in natural weathering is accomplished largely by ferric sulphate and sulphuric acid, formed by the action of the atmosphereic oxygen and water oh ' pyrite. The flow of solutions being properly regulated and perculating through the ore columns, the natural weathering is greatly accelerated, and the descending solution is so enriched that when it reaches the precipitating launders, in the Mascot tunnel, enough copper content is there to make the opeartion highly profitable. These launders are 3,200 feet in length, having internal .cross sections 32x32 inches, located in the Mascot tunnel, and additional 1,400 foot launder has been installed outside the tunnel. Samuel K. While many of them haVe heard of our mining towns, yet there are many who will be surprised at the greatness in our mine development Bingham canyon will prove a wonder to all who have not seen the great engineering feat of the Utah Copper Company in' leveling huge mountains of solid copper ore, crossed wtih many fissures of other ores. Big steam shovels are loading hundreds of cars with the mineralized rock and some day a whole mountain will have disappeared. Notwithstanding that the Copper Company has been working for years on one mountain, only a ' few terraces show where millions of tons of copper ore, and other ore, have been taken out and sent to the smelters. This will bring to Utah all the worlds big mining men and will prove a big advertisement for the state. Just at present Utah is very prosperous in its mining industry. All the big mines are paying dividends and more mineral ore is produced than ever in the history of the state. Yet we are just raking over the surface on a few hills or mountains. The state has been barely scratched in its mineral resources, and there is no reason to doubt that we will develop still larger mines than we have at .the present time.
