A study of the map herewith reveals to the reader one of the very richest states in the country, and there is no reason why this state cannot be a leader in the commercial market in a majority of the products produced out of the earth in our state. 1 UTAH POWER AND LIGHT CO. BIG INDUSTRIAL PLANT The Utah Power and Light Company furnishes practically all the electrical energy for heating, lighting and manufacturing purposes used in the state. Nearly all of its electrical power is made by water force. Large streams and rivers are harnessed and the water shot down the hillside where it turns immense turbines. Nearly the entire territory west of the Rockies, especially in Idaho and Utah, is controlled by this company, a network of power lines extending over an area of more than 300 miles. Electric power is not alone used in the cities. It has found its way into all the big mining camps and we find it used in mining, milling, smelting, ventilaton, pumping, air compression, hositing, tram conveyance, lighting underground railway operations and in many other applications in mine shops and surface mining. In the metalliferous mines of the state, the coal mines and quarries, the use of electricity is general, both in production and subsequent handling of material. At ' , Bingham is a fine example of electrified workings, great electric shovels being employer literally to uproot a mountain of copper ore on the property of the Utah Copper Company. Electricity also plays a large part of the milling and smelting of ores. The main office of the Utah Power arid Light Company is located in the Kearns Building, this city. Nearly every electrical appliance used in the home can be seen there, from an electric iron to a cook stove and from a fan to a refrigerator. This is one of the biggest industries of the state as well as on' of theft gest taxpayers. . . Two members of the church approached old e t ored fo cle Ras for. a contribution.
