Under a new senior citizens' program, the agency is offering free legal assistance and referrals to local attorney! on a host of senior citizen problems via a statewide toll-fre-e phone The agency will handle problems ranging from welfare to social security and landlord-tenan- t relations to age discrimination. To be eligible, senior citizens 60 and over must qualify for a government assistance program such as SSI or state welfare or have an income below the federal poverty line. Eventually, Mr. Shepard said, the program will be using other senior citizens trained under a special paralegal program to deal with senior citizen problems. Plans also call for training sessions starting in April to prepare senior citizens as legal assistants to work with other senior citizen. Legal assistants will be able to represent clients in matters concerning welfare, food stamps, and the Social Security Administration, and make referrals to attorneys on other legal problems such as consumer rights, wills and estate planning, bankruptcy, divorce, pensions, and age discrimination.
