In a letter to Stephen Wise and Gregory Stout, Attorneys, dated December 17, 1972, Dean Burk, Ph.D., a biochemist, declared: "With forty-fiv- e years of study and research on thecancer problem, the last thirty-thre- e years in the U.S. National Cancer Institute, .and with files of virtually all published literature on the use of amygdalin ("Laetrile") with reference to cancer, and with innumerable files of unpublished documents and letters ; I have found no statements of demonstrated pharmacological harmfulness of amygdalin to human beings at any dosages recommended or employed by medical doctors in the United States and abroad. In a speech before the International Medical Society for Blood and Tumor Disease in West Germany 1970, Dr. Krebs stressed: on November 7, (Laetrile) is totally ic ..It is so nearly that in some studies the water, used as a diluent, presents a greater toxicity non-toxi- B-- 17 c.. non-tox- than the vitamin .... Wild claims have not been made for Laetrile. The most extreme claim made for Laetrile therapy is that it will control (but not cure) cancer just as insulin controls (but does not cure) diabetes. In his aforementioned book, Michael L. Culbert puts it this way: should once again strongly reiterate that neither Dr. Burk, nor Laetrile s developer and pioneer, Ernst T. physiKrebs, Jr., nor the Laetrile-usin- g cians around the world have ever rehs a cure for cancer. garded vitamin In its oral and injectable form, they insist it is the best cancer weapon we have. HOW LAETRILE WORKS B-- 17 X-ra- LEGAL VICTORIES FOR LAETRILE On August 15, 1975, U.S. District Judge Luther Bohanon issued a court order per- mitting fifteen persons to obtain Laetrile. The judge noted that thousands of persons have been treated with it, and an estimated 50,000 persons use it. Judge Bohanan also stated: "The Court finds from the evidence that Laetrile is not a toxic or harmful substance if used in proper dosage, but is, on the other hand, an alternative treatment of cancer which can be used y, by promising ever-larg-er programs and government grants. tax-suppor- ted "It is an ominous fact that, each year, there are more people making a living from cancer than are dying from it. "If the riddle were to be solved by a simple vitamin found abundantly and inexpensively in nature, this gigantic commercial and political industry could be wiped out almost overnight. BUREAUCRATS BAN LAETRILE The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was created in 1906 with the protection of the public as its primary aim. Today it has become a huge bureaucracy with the and power to determine which drugs can which cannot be used. In an article in the September 8, 1976, issue of THE REVEIW OF THE NEWS, Mike Culbert discusses Laetrile and the FDA. According to Culbert, there is no specific federal law against Laetrile or its natural sources, such as apricot and peach kernels. Yet the compound is specifically forbidden for use in human cancer by California State laws, and indirectly by laws in several other States which make it illegal to use unapproved remedies. The Food and Drug Administration attempts to keep Laetrile out u of interstate shipment a law and sale through a regulation ot . of AMERICAN OPINION magazine, AUn Stang gives the following oversimplified explanation of how Laetrile works to fight cancer. Cancer tissue is surrounded by sea When Laetrile is introof hydrolyzes (or duced, the of sugar, two molecules into it decomposes) one molecule of benzaldehyde (which is an analgesic, or pain reliever), and one se. beta-glucosid- ase molecule of HCN (hydrogen cyanide). The normal cell contains another enzyme known as rhodanese, which detoxifies the cyanide, in lieu of surgery or radiation cobalt. According to an Associated Press dispatch of April 28, 1976, datelined Oklahoma City: "A federal judge, saying that to deny three women access to the so-call- ed wonder drug Laetrile, would be cruelty, ordered that they be by which it is construed as either an unlicensed new drug or an unsafe food ad- Laetrile advocates claim it is neither, rather it is a vitamin and should ditive. be no more susceptible to than Vitamin C. legalization Congressman Larry McDonald, a medical doctor, in a statement on May 18, 1976, had this to say: is simply nothing illegal about a physician prescribing a certain "There diet, including vitamins and food supplements, in the treatment of various diseases, including cancer, whether the FDA has banned any of the constituents in the diet or not. The Hippocratic oath says nothing about a doctor subordinating his judgment and his patients life to an FDA bureaucrat. McDonald then charged that the FDAs ban on interstate shipment of Laetrile is illegal on at least two grounds. First, Congress has specifically classified vitamins as foods and thus the FDA has no under the authority to ban vitamin statutes pertaining to drugs. B-- 17 As mentioned earlier in this pamphlet, occurs abundantly in nature, vitamin but because of changes in our eating habits, and because of modern food processing, the normal Western diet is almost devoid of this vital food factor. However, any diet in which whole fruits and vegetables are consumed, including their seeds, is a guarantee of into the body. All bringing some fruits grown in North America except citrus fruits contain portions of vitamin in their seeds. To avoid excess in consumption, however, it is advised to follow the simple rule that one should not eat at one time more seeds of any kind than he likely could consume if he also were eating a reasonable quantity of the whole fruit. Laetrile has been legally shipped to, or used in, two dozen countries without interference from their governments. Ernesto Contreras, M.D., is perhaps the best-knoLaetrile physician in the world. In the past decade, thousands of American cancer patients have flocked to his Del Mar Medical Center in Tijuana, Mexico, for a treatment that is legal in Mexico but condemned in the United States. In his book, Mike Culbert B-- 17 B-- 17 out-and-- out allowed to import it .... "(Judge Luther) Bohanon s order prohibits the FDA from interfering with the women s importation of the drug." (The AP errs. To repeat: Laetrile is a not a drug.) vitamin WHAT LAETRILE ADVOCATES CLAIM The advocates of Laetrile therapy have always gone out of their way to emphasize that there is no cure, as such, for cancer. Since cancer is essentially a deficiency disease, one can only speak of prevention or control but not cure. Laetrile cannot restore tissue destroyed by cancer. Laetrile-usin- How- g physicians around the world believe that Laetrile provides noticeable relief for cancer patients. Dr. Krebs identified it as vitamin The substance is also known as amygdalin. It was Dr. Krebs who identified the specific composition of this substance, isolated it into crystalline form and gave it the name of Laetrile, a brand name now in the public domain. Discussing Laetrile, G. Edward Griffin had this to say in his aforementioned book: "The particular type of amygdalin crystal developed by Dr. Krebs, known as Laetrile, is unique because it is considerably more soluble than any of the "Vitamin cept upon which Laetrile rests is anathema to the drug industry. G. Edward Griffin, in his book World Without Cancer -- - Part II, declares: 1 Cancer, in the United States, at least, has become a business. Not only are fortunes made in the fields of research, drugs, and but political careers, also, are enhanced multi-billion-dol- zation." SUPPORT FOR LAETRILE GROWING In the summer of 1972, the Committee for Freedom of Choice in Cancer Therapy, 910 Clayton Inn Center, 7777 Bonhomme, St. Louis, Mo. 63105, was organized. By August 1976 it had 28,000 members grouped into 430 chapters which included 800 M.D.s among the 1,100 medical professionals it numbers as members. Committee chapters in Alaska sponsored a bill which became the first Freedom of Choice act in the as of September 21, nation, allowing 1976 the full legal use of Laetrile in that State even as the FDA seeks to keep Laetrile out of interstate shipment and sale. Petition drives to legalize Laetrile, vitamin are now underway in a number of other States.
