Few most including people, graduates, college By Captain Joe H. Ferguson understand and appreciate the economic system that brought this country to the point where it was the richest nation in the history of the world. Now, for the first time, this country is beginning to fall behind other countries in per capita income, for example, and other measures of both prosperity and efficiency. The reason for this turn is the very ignorance of the free market that has allowed the A TIME OF CHALLENGE The Americans who read the Utah Independent are well aware of the challenges which face us during this period of history. These are times during which we are faced with serious challenges. Our own government is being transformed from a constitutional republic to a socialistic dictatorship. Huge bureaucracies impose the will of countless Washington bureaucrats upon the people. Fines and penalties are imposed upon the people without due process of law. And taxes! We are being taxed to death! And npt only are these taxes not being used in our behalf they are being used to forge the chains to further enslave us in this socialistic dictatorship. So, we Americans have many challenges facing us in this time. BUT A TIME OF OPPORTUNITY If one were to look only at the challenges facing us today and ignore the opportunities, he could become very discouraged. But in the overall picture, there are many very promising prospects. This nation has endured many crises in its history. In fact, it was bom in a time of crisis . As we look back through history, we can see that America produced the men and women to step forth and carry her through. In many instances, individual Americans performed heroic deeds to turn defeat into victory. Washington and his men, outnumbered and poorly equipped, had to whip the British before the American Republic could be founded. So they whipped them. John Paul Jones whipped an entire enemy fleet while his own ship was sinking under him. There are thousands of such examples of outstanding performance by Americans to preserve this great nation. Look at the bright side we are not going barefoot in the snow as Washington's men had to do. We have homes to live in and three meals a day. We could spend a considerable amount of time in just counting our blessings. We need not be discouraged by the challenges facing us we need only to assess our strengths and apply these strengths to meeting these challenges. We need to apply more of our time, money and energy in defense of liberty. We need to become more determined to win. When we make ourselves more determined, and when we apply more of our time, money and energy to the battle, we will win. At the beginning of 1977, 1 wish to wish you the best for the coming year and coming years. Worse yet, the government has begun to convince a growing portion of the the 'free people, that enterprise system doesnt work any longer; that there are structural problems increased which only government intervention are cure.
