Show Girls 8, Boys Special vocabulary helps boaters stay safe on water Terms used in boating are different than our normal every day language. Boating terminology needs to be significantly different in sound and meaning so there is no misunderstanding, A mistake in meaning could have disastrous results. Lets look at some of the terms. The right side of a boat, usually called a vessel, is cal! star board anti the left the port - no possibility of misinterpreting those. The front, some times jok- ingly referred to as the pointy end is bow and the back the stem. .The flat part of the stem is the transom. There are boats called double-endewhich are pointed on both ends. Examples are canoes and kayaks and some sailboats. The part of the boat where the hull meets the deck is called the gunwale (pronounced gunl). free boad is the minimum vertical distance from the waterline to the gunwale. Overloading will cause less freeboard with the possibility of swamping, especially in bad or foul weather. rs Earlier this summer I bought a pontoon boat. Some in my family would argue that it wasnt much of a boat, but after weeks of building railings, installing seats, and laying carpet, I had it ready to be tested for seaworthiness. There is no kitchen on a boat, it is called a galley; and a toilet is called a head. There are no ropes aboard a vessel, but if looking toward the back you are looking aft or astern. Off to the side of the boat is abeam. The helm is the mechanism by which the vessel is steered, normally the wheel or on a sailboat the tiller,' The beam is the widest part of the boat: Draft is the' vertical distance from the waterline to the lowest part of the vessel beneath the water. This is very important to know so you wont run aground. Of course, the more weight placed in the vessel the deeper the draft. Aloft means above the deck and below means under the deck. There are no doors, there are h atche s. Fore and aft is lengthwise along the keel and normally is the length ? of the boat. The keel is the very bottom of the boat and it is from that the boat is constructed and is ; the strongest point. It is the boats spine. The bilge is the lowest internal space within the vessel's hull. Here we probably should give a definition of super-- ; structure such as a cabin or flying bridge. These are many of the nautical terms and ones most likely to be used. There are a lot more, but these are enough for now, ; Practice the proper terminology and become and sound like a real mariner. I wanted a boat with a big flat deck so I could take my whole family when I went fishing. My smaller boat will carry four of us, but when I take part of the family, the rest complain. The only solution was to find something big enough to take everyone at once. Last Saturday we took the pontoon boat out for its maiden voyage. The crew consisted of my wife, three daughters, two sons and two friends. I went along as fishing guide and deck hand. When we finally got the trailer lights connected and the fishing rods stowed aboard, we set course for Jordanelle. It was a great relief to see the boat floating and to know that the pontoons didnt leak. As we dropped anchor, in a sheltered bay that was out of the afternoon wind, the boys began to suggest that they we're going to catch all of the fish. The girls didnt agree and our afternoon shakeout cruise suddenly turned into a fishing tournament. old Michele, my daughter, started the action by Bountifuls Jack Barnett made impact for Parks BOUNTIFUL Jack Barnett, of the Utah Board of Parks and Recreation, has retired after 1 1 years of representing the parks and recreation interests of Davis, Morgan and Weber county residents. Barnett, a Bountiful resident, was appointed to the board on October 1, 1984. The Utah Board of Parks and Recreation consists of seven members, one for each judicial district in the state. Members are appointed by the Governor of Utah to set policy for the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation. Prior to his board service Barnett graduated from the University of Utah with a B.S. degree in geology and a M.S. degree in ground water geology. A registered professional engineer and professional geologist, he has been extensively involved in the water and geology fields since 1957, in both Utah and Idaho. He is currently president of Barnett Intermountain Water Consulting in Bountiful and deals with water rights and resource issues for the state of Utah. Reflecting back on 1 1 years of board service, Barnett listed a number of significant accomplishments. One of the most significant votes the board was involved in was whether park rangers should become fully accredited police officers, Barnett said. Up to that point, state park rangers were carrying out many peace officer related duties, but were not allowed to carry firearms. The board voted to make state park rangers fully accredited peace officers, allowing them to cany out their responsibilities fully. Jerry Miller and Courtland Nelson were the two men selected as directors of the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation during Barnetts service on the board. Barnett was impressed with their leadership abilities and sees their selection by the board as an important accomplishment. Confirming and selecting the two directors were very positive steps toward the state park system becoming a very viable statewide system, he said. Within Davis County, the boards work at acquiring all of Antelope Island as a state park and developing the parks bison program were major accomplishments, Barnett said. Determinations made as to the future direction of This Is 1 at fishing tourney The Place and Wasatch Mountain state parks were also important accomplishments. Ive really enjoyed all the board members and all the park staff, he said. They are a great group of people, fun to work with and dedicated to public service. Barnett and his wife Ilene are the parents of seven children. Barnett enjoys camping and out- door activities, is an avid racquet-ba- ll and tennis player and enjoys serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Da- y Saints. hooking a 14 inch rainbow. It was the first fish she had truly taken on her own, and she was excited. Cathy, one of our friends, then hooked a 15 inch rainbow. Even though it was her first fish, she played it like an expert and brought it into the boat. Not to be left out, Jannifer and Noelle, my other two daughters WINNING TEAM: From left, Cathy Shanks, Michele Hemingway and Jannifer Hemingway proudly display some of the fish they took last Saturday at Jordanelle Reservoir. caught fish. Jannifer's was the largest of the day, being just over 16 inches and weighing about two pounds. As if to add insult to injury, Jannifer proceeded to hook three more rainbows, and Cathy tied into one more beauty. The boys kept complaining that I was making them fish where there were no fish, and that their equipment was not working properly. Their complaints were softened when my son Mark caught a seven inch rainbow that saved them from being skunked. The final tally was girls 8 and boys 1 . Mark has been heard to tell others that you should never take girls fishing because they will catch all of the fish. Jordanelles fishing is good from a boat, but the fish are in deep water and you cant cast far enough from the shore to reach them. He had the most success with orange Berkley Power Bait, but we also took them on red and rainbow colored baits. The lake is still popular, and at the end of the day the launching ramp had about a half hour wait before I could trailer my boat. If you are going, you might want to avoid Saturday afternoons. My only regret is that Greg, our other guest, didnt catch a fish. 1 have promised to take him along again After all, with my pontoon boat, finding room for another fisherman isnt a problem. $1 million offered for hole - in -one The first Million Dollar Hole-In-Ocontest and golf tournament will take place at Riverbend Golf Course, Saturday, Oct. 7.
