MOUNTAIN SALT LAKE CITY The day after Mountain View crushed the Lady Darts championship dreams, Davis entered the record books by outlasting Alta in four overtimes. The contest, which lasted more than two hours, was the longest in girls state tournament history. It wasnt my idea of how to get in the record books, said Davis coach Chimane Creer. But, we'll take it. Indeed, a win is a win. Nobody wanted to lose, said Creer. We had to fight for everything we got. The fans got their moneys worth thats for sure. Said Alta coach Anita Timpson: It was a lot of fun. You play that long and you want to come away with a win, but thats OK. We gave the fans some entertainment. Even Gene Thats entertainment! Kelly would have to agree. However, in the end, folks needed a program to identify the remaining players. Alta star Alii Bills, who 26 finished with a game-hig- h points, and Davis standout Megan Jensen, who had 21, each fouled out in the first overtime leaving the supporting cast to finish the show. Fortunately, the Lady Darts had veterans Natalie Pearson, Jill Atwater and Amy Weston to turn to. The trio, who finished with 23,14 and 10 points respectively, scored all of Davis overtime points to lead the victory charge. In the fourth and final extra session, the trio outscored a depleted Lady Hawks squad 2 to finish the marathon. However, high drama and intensity laced every other frame. A three-poishot by Altas Jennifer Tierney knotted the score in the final 40 seconds of the third overtime, while tiny Stacy Holmes, a sophomore, nailed a field goal at the buzzer to give Alta new life in the second overtime. And last, but not least, an offensive charging against Bills capped the first overtime with five seconds 7-- nt remaining. Prior to the overtimes, Davis erased a 8 deficit by capping a 12-- 0 run midway through the fourth quarter. All year we have been able to come back from being down, but not tonight, our shooting was just not here, said Davis coach Chimane Creer. We had to fight hard to come back tonight. When your shots dont fall you have a hard time winning games. Despite entering the postseason as three-tim- e defending state cham- pions, injury-riddle- d Mountain View surprised many observers by placing third in this years tournament. Weve had a hard season with a lot with injuries. We didnt know until three weeks ago if we would even be here because we finished in third place, said Lady Bruins coach Dave Houle. Our region really helped us prepare for this. When you play teams like American Fork and Alta all year gives good experience for this. Davis on the other hand went relatively uninjured this year and its perfect region record speaks for itself.
