Show 1 White Whitewater need new, muddier name se, nr If incredibly bad judgment could get a president impeached, Gore would be moving into the oval office. The Whitewater scandal is boiling around the White House as top officials are being swept away in a torrent of accusations. White House Chief Counsel Bernard Nussbaum resigned Saturday after he and five other top White House officials were served with subpoenas regarding their involvement in private briefings on a confidential investigation into the failure of a defunct Arkansas thrift with ties to President and Mrs. Clinton. The White House has confirmed that at least two meetings were held last fall in which regulators investigation into the failed thrift were discussed. The explanation There was no wrongdoing, that according to chief of staff Mack McLarty who in a Monday morning interview said Nussbaum was asked to resign to Put the matter behind us and get on with more important things. He went on to say that the American public is not interested in scandals, They are interested in the millions who cannot get health insurance. The truth is, the American public is tired of scandals, especially scandals involving their president, but that does not mean they are not interested in the truth. The truth is there are too many things to put behind Clinton. It must be getting crowded back there. In just a little over one year hes had to put a number of embarrassing, questionable reports behind him. The public has been willing to forgive and forget a myriad of Clinton improprieties. Theyve turned the other cheek when slapped with news of moral indiscretions of their commander in chief. Theyve looked away as one by one Clintons choices as top aides have proven to be less than worthy of public praise. But the public cannot ignore this obvious interference into a confidential investigation. This cannot be just another error in judgment from Clinton. Now, with the FBI at the White House door, Clinton has agreed to full cooperation in the Whitewater investigation. His statement on the news of the subpoenas, It would have been better if the meetings hadnt occurred. Thats the classic understatement. Hes been president long enough to know his every action is going to be scrutinized. And if Clinton disputes that, he must understand hes been alive long enough to know right from wrong. The documents are still being gathered (those that have not been ordered destroyed) to determine if President and Mrs. Clinton are criminally linked to charges that they were possible beneficiaries of misuse of funds from Madison Guaranty Savings and Loan Association. Madison Guaranty is the failed Arkansas thrift once owned by James McDougal, the Role model coach flunked humanity Amid the furor over Tonya Harding, one commonly heard statements about a return to sports purity. Money, greed and ego should be dashed from athletic competition, folks said.. .And one national commentator went so far as to say that high school sports competition was the last bastion of dignified athleticism. Cyclo ps by Bryan Gray Hes wrong. Theres nothing dignified about a fact sheet I Clintons had been named in a criminal referral prepared by the Resolution Trust Corp., the S&L cleanup agency. Criminal referrals are highly confidential documents in which federal regulators pass on suspected evidence to prosecutors. It is highly irregular to pass that evidence on to those being investigated or their associates. As the Whitewater investigation continues to muddy and taint the Clinton presidency, the public awaits yet another explanation as to why their leader must spend so much time defending his personal actions. Yes, a health care plan to insure uninsurables is something the public is interested in, but the chief of staff should not be so fast in trying to sweep this scandal under the already bulging Clinton rug with the belief the public isnt interested. The public would also like to see a balanced budget, but with Clinton in the White House just the added cost of damage control could prevent that decade old dream. a DAVIS Published semi-weekl- by Clipper Publishing Co., Inc. 9 John Stahle, Jr. publisher Gail Stahle publisher Judy Jensen managing editor y John Stable, Sr .publisher R. 1 1892-195- 1954-198- 4 1990-prese- 370 South 500 West, Bountiful, Utah 84010 ISSN: Publication COUNTY No. (USPS 1061-122- 3 published 149-18- semi-weekl- y on New Years at Bountiful, Tuesday and Friday except the week of Christmas and Utah Second class postage paid at Bountiful, Utah. In defense of the parents in our community who have not abandoned their responsibility as parents towards their children, I would like the police chiefs to know, and particularly Chief Oswald of Centerville, that not all parents have let down or lost control, as he said in the article. There are still a lot of great teenagers in Davis County that have been taught right from wrong and know how to act and have respect for authority. Sometimes I feel that the police see a teenager or group of teens out late at night and automatically suspect they are up to no good or that they are part of a gang! Some have the attitude that a teen today is guilty until proven innocent! I realize and fully understand that some teens in our area have some problems and need our help. Most of these teens probably have not had a parent or parents to teach them and love them and so they go where they get attention or identity. Sometimes this is with a gang or they put on the outward act of a want-to-b- 295-304- 4 FAX Several days following publication of the Cyclops column, a Salt Lake Tribune reporter penned a lengthy article statistically showing that more than half of the teams varsity football players didnt live within the schools traditional boundaries. Due to the schools open enrollment policy, this practice was I e gang member, but deep down inside they are asking for help. Unfortunately some get caught up in the total gang associations and need to pay the consequences. They have not been taught that with this so called freedom or free agency comes responsibility and consequences. It is obvious that some parents are not doing their job in teaching, training, and loving and providing positive experiences and activities to help keep their kids off the streets and out of trouble. Some of the Region school. ..And that the name at the week for the Salt Lake coach. When same bottom (the author) was the very same assistant coach who had accused Cyclopes of lacking class. The Associated Press reported Nussbaum was told that the age. The coach in question, he wrote, was a great role model for student athletes, whereas Cyclops problems these teens have must rest with delinquent parents also. But I feel it is also the responsibility of the courts and disciplinary councils to immediately impose a sentence or punishment upon the offenders and make them responsible for their actions. If the youths were involved in graffiti or some act of vandalism, they should be responsible for restitution or cleaning up the graffiti. Under proper supervision the offender would learn that heshe is not going to be allowed to get away with or commit the same act again. If they do, they will be met with the consequences. A slap on the hand or a few days in detention without any means of restitution is not going to change the mind of the offender. They need to be taught responsibility, accountability and respect for law and authority. They need to be taught that a person is responsible for their own actions, that they cannot blame others for their mistakes. Some factors may make it harder for us to perform according to what is right and wrong, but being accountable for how we use our agency means being answerable for our own behavior. They need to understand and be taught that when their free agency interferes or takes away anothers free agency, that they have broken a law, and the consequences of that action is the loss of their free agency until they leam right from wrong. I feel that it wouldnt hurt every youngster to go through some sort of boot camp. The state of Florida has been trying that technique for some time now, and has had some great results. When the offender has been released, the percentage of second or third offenses has dropped dramatically. Sure all these ideas are great, and have probably been discussed at length, but the question remains, where is the money coming from to pay for these programs. The governor has just indicated that there is a lot of extra money this year. Suggestions have been given where ( who tarnish a proud and successful high school football program. Then it lists some of these foul coaches by name. Heres a sampling: One coach is called the biggest crybaby. Another coach is labeled the least respected of all prep coaches for his notorious lies and manipulations. A third coach is referred to as d the most bitter and coach, in 5A, destined to forever lose. About a fourth coach, the author asks, Why is he boobing and whining about us? We dont even know where Magna is! small-minde- to use the extra money: education, rebate, homeless and needy? What about ear-marki- some of that money to cities and counties to help fight the gang problems?, for better and more specialized law enforcement directed at some of the more pressing crime problems in our society? Give the legislature some encouragement to pass tougher gang related laws that would take the repeat offender off the streets and programs to rehabilitate those that can be helped. One last comment. The chiefs indicated that perhaps some of the problems are a result of new people moving in from California and other areas. There may be some truth to that comment, but I believe that most people moving into our area want to get away from the gang influence on their children, some have moved for economic reasons. But whatever the case, these new families need to realize and try to understand why this is a great place to raise kids and why we dont have as many problems as other areas of the country, yet, anyway! Bountiful has just celebrated its centennial in 1992, when it was incorporated as a city. However, the hardy stock of Mormon pioneers have been her since 1847. These families settled our communities with values and traditions of esty, integrity, and law abiding honprin- ciples that have been passed on through the years. Our cities and towns are a safe and great place to raise a family and live because these principles have been maintained and upheld by law abiding citizens. The mores and standards that make up our communities need to continue to be upheld by the families that are moving in to our area. Some stores and activities are closed on Sunday, because we have a rich heritage of worshipping God, not just Mormons but others religions also have had this tradition through the years. New people in our area have to understand that some of the practices we have is what has kept our communi test Why is this fact sheet" posted in the school locker room? I suppose to instill school pride. Maybe the coaches figure the athletes will get pumped up thinking that they are surrounded by enemies. But is this attitude appropriate for high school athletics? Should coaches motivate students by tearing down other individuals and the competing teams? 1 dont know. Remember, Im and a lackluster opinionated just hack columnist who doesnt understand the qualities of a true role model. All I know is that I will be in attendance next fall when these wonderful Salt Lake role models compete against our Davis County football teams. Ill even take notes, hoping that I can learn to become a better citizen. What games will I attend? How about Bountiful vs. vs. Sky line... Or Viewmont .or vs. Davis Skyline.. Skyline... ties safe and free from problems that other cities face, and try to fit in and help us to maintain these standards and principles. It wouldnt hurt to try. It hasnt hurt some of the families that have been living here for nearly 150 years, and it wont hurt any of us for the next 150 years to try and keep it this way. We are all involved in these circumstances whether we want to be or not. We are either actively involved or we can sit by passively and let things continue to become worse by not doing anything to help stop the nonsense. I for one, have raised five teenagers here in Bountiful, and have tried my best to teach them correct principles and let them govern themselves. I have been actively involved in civic and church affairs all my life, and continue my support to help Bountiful to be a great place to live and raise families. Perhaps what every youngster needs is working for Charlie Bangerter for one summer; he would teach them responsibility, respect and dependability, besides what is right and wrong!
