Show C8 DAVIS COUNTY CLIPPER Tuesday. November 16, 1993 Local author 's work at Sam Weller's Meservys book featured at Sam Wellers Book store at the Five Points Mall in Bountiful is featuring local childrens author. Jay The Terrible, Meservys book, Horrible, Awful, Deplorable, Lovable, Little Troll. Meservy, a lawyer and a native Utahn, maintained his law practice in Salt Lake City for 29 years while living in Bountiful. Meservy moved his offices to the Five Points Mall in Bountiful in 1992. Although still active in the practice of law, Meservy has had a life long love of poetry and writing. He began telling stories to his five children at bedtime. When he decided to write the stories down he quite naturally put them in rhyme. Getting them published, however, was not easy. His first story about the Troll was completed twenty years ago and he received numerous rejection letters before receiving that special letter which all writers long to see. Unfortunately the publisher who contracted to publish the book had financial difficulties and was forced to abandon the project. After fifteen years and many more we regret letters, the book finally came to the attention of Beautiful America An Olde Publishers out of Wilsonville, Oregon and the story of the Lovable Troll finally reached the public. The story tells of the Troll who lived alone because of his terrible appearance. Although he was truly lovable nobody knew it. The Valley Folk were being bullied by a mean, wicked giant who stole their food each year at harvest. The Troll interceded on behalf of the Valley Folk and disposed of the giant. Everyone then knew that it didnt matter what the Troll looked like but what he could and did do which measured his worth. Everyone loved him then because he was lovable. Meservy and his publisher have done some interesting things with the printing of the text. Many of the words are printed so as to depict their meaning. The word hunched rises and falls in print and the word caved falls and rises. These techniques of descriptive printing add interest for the child. Meservy said as he read other writers of childrens books, such as Dr. Zeuss, he noted that they would make up nonsense words to add to the rhythm or sound of the story. 5-Poi- nts Meservy said he, instead, uses actual words which add interest to the rhythm and lyrical tone of the story even though the children will not, at first, know their meaning. Eventually, however, the child will actually learn the words and thus get an early start on building his or her vocabulary. There are two more stories which will soon make it through the maze of hurdles which stand between every story and the public Meservy said. Look for Cassandra and the Fearful, Tearful, Tail Waggin Dragon and The Year Santa Got Stuck in the Chimney in the near future. These, too, are all in rhyme. Meservy is in the process of putting on paper many other stories which he hopes to share with the public in the not too distant future. This week Meservy also spent an hour On a regular basis Meservy can be found at local schools reading his stories to the children, telling them how stories get published and teaching them of the real life process of becoming a published author.
