Show C4 Tuesday, October 12, 1993 DAVIS COUNTY CUPPER ghools Utah Talent Search seeks jr. highs' best, brightest Junior high school students who have scored extremely high on standardized achievement tests are invited to participate in the Utah Talent Search, coordinated by the Department of Special Education at the University of Utah. Students who participate will have the opportunity to take either the ACT or SAT test, both of which are normally taken in high school as college entrance exams. To be eligible to participate, students in the seventh, eighth or ninth grade must have scored in the 95th percentile in a major subsection of a standardized achievement test administered by the school. These include total math, total verbal, total battery, or science and social studies. "Participants will gain early experience with college entrance exams," says Dr. Joan Wolf, associate professor of special education and area coordinator of the Gifted Education Program at the U., who has overall responsibility for the talent search. "A major benefit of participation in the talent search is the opportunity for high achievers to meet other bright and motivated students and to share academic experiences," says Wolf. "They are at an age where being different is sometimes difficult, and it's very positive to spend time with kids like themselves. This is the second year of the search, and we encourage last year's participants to enroll again this year." All participants will be recognized by their schools for their achievement. Top scorers on the ACT and SAT will be eligible for scholarships to the University of Youth Utah of Academy Excellence. Operated by the Division of Continuing Education, the program combines formal instruction with field trips, speakers and sports to provide enrichment programs in humanities, science, mathematics and writing. District gifted program coordinators and counselors at junior high schools throughout the state have been provided with information and application forms. The application deadline is Oct. 8. Every student will receive coupons for a dollar off to the Institute of Terror. On the back of each coupon is stamped "Millcreek Jr. High." For every coupon that the Institute receives with Millcreek stamped on it, the school gets $1.
