Southern Utah News Bit by a bat in bed JENSEN - Dustin of -- Jensen, got an unusual awakening -Hinkle, 17, - a bat was nibbling at his arm. The bat bit the underside of his arm and became hooked in his bed when he rose to turn on the lights. The bat continued biting Dustin's bed. "We suspected it had rabies so we closed off all the exits to the room," Dustin said. "We think it came in the house through the air conditioning." The highway patrol transported the bat to Salt Lake City where it was tested and determined to be rabid. "I was worried because I thought I would have to have shots in the stomach, but they were just in the shoulder," he said. Dustin said he is not feeling any side effects from the encounter with the bat and he is sleeping soundly back in his bed. "They said this was the first time that a bat has bitten a person in the Uintah Basin," he said. Vernal Express for all Equal justice Uintah UINTAH COUNTY County Sheriff Lloyd Meacham k voluntarily began a suspension without pay for allegedly filing a false time sheet last June. The Uintah County Sheriffs Department has a contract with the U.S. Forest Service to supplement the patrol of the Ashley National Forest at $10 per hour. The contract is for $7,900 a year and is paid in a lump sum based on time sheets submitted by officers to Uintah County. Last June, Sheriff Meacham filed a time sheet claiming 28 hours of patrol on the forest, but never performed the service, said Uintah County Attorney Harry Souvall. "Even though he has compensated the 28 hours almost three fold, he still filed a false report. Attorney Souvall said. "Due to this discrepancy, I have imposed upon myself a two-wee- k suspension without pay for my actions," said Sheriff Meacham in a prepared statement. The two male juveniles, both 13, were apprehended after a brief pursuit by several Utah Highway Patrol troopers and two Carbon County deputy sheriffs near milepost 297 on State Road 6 east of Wellington after an alleged $11 gas skip from a store in Wellington, Martinez said. Both boys were charged and referred to juvenile authorities. Martinez indicated that a witness at the store reporting the incident said neither subject looked old enough to drive. The boys, driving a 1978 Chevrolet Camaro, were east bound on SR 6 when UPH made contact with the vehicle, he said. Martinez said the youths did not stop when the officers approached them and continued on at approximately 50 miles per hour. He said a highway patrolman observed what appeared to be a gun tossed out the window of the car. The patrolman stopped and retrieved a Smith and Wesson .44 handgun and then continued the pursuit. Martinez said UPH's Larry Fish had laid out a spike strip on the road near Cedar Ridge which blew out the suspect's tires and the youths were quickly apprehended. He said the youths allegedly told officers they had the weapon to take along with them to go camping. Sun Advocate ' A man's junk, another's treasure SPANISH VALLEY -- - The Grand County Council spent close to two hours hearing from angry Spanish Valley residents, incensed at county efforts to enforce clean-u- p ordinances in the area. Letters from the county were sent to four property owners, giving them 21 days to correct the alleged violation. But a number of valley residents spoke heatedly of the right of owners to do what they want with their land, stating that what some people might call junk, including old cars and appliances, others consider valuable property. Duane Dull, one of the residents who received a letter said that he and others speaking out at the meeting represented the majority point of view in the county, and that they were tired of being told how to live. According to county council member John Hartley, letters were sent following complaints from other residents. Council chairman Charlie Peterson added that in a recent public hearing on setting up a combined city and county code compliance office, the Chamber of Commerce urged stricter enforcement of clean up rules.
