Show 1 DAVIS COUNTY CLIPPER Highland edges Darts, By RANDY HENDRICKS Sports Writer KAYSVILLE Trailing '23-1- 7 early in the fourth period, Davis used an end around run by Joe Zundell, and a Kyle Olsen to Chad Bessinger pass to move the ball into Ram territory at the 46. Unfortunately, Davis was flagged for an illegal motion call, and Brad Chatterton was forced to punt anyway. On the subsequent series, the Rams were forced back to their own 13 yard line by clipping and holding penalties. But on a third down and 30 yards to Late Friday night, while many football observers were looking back, Davis football coach Jim Dickson characteristically chose to look forward. Im thinking about how to win the next two games. We win those two games and were in the state tournament." The Highland High Rams had seemingly doomed the Darts to their first losing season in Over two decades with a 23-1- 7 victory, but the possibility of a berth and subsequent win in tournament play still offer a glimmer of light at the end of the otherwise dark tunnel. Davis hosts Bountiful this Friday and closes out its regular season with a game at Viewmont Thursday, Oct. 21. These kids have stayed focused with us. Its unfortunate all this business about the winning seasons came out now, and the article in the paper (the Salt Lake Tribune ran a story regarding Davis consecutive winning season streak being in jeopardy) didnt help. These kids dont need the extra pressure, said Dickson. They have as much heart as any bunch Ive ever worked with. Im not giving up on them. As has been the pattern this season for the Darts, they stayed close enough Friday to have a chance in the final few minutes, but just couldnt come up with the big play or stop the big play when they needed to. Instead, undefeated Highland got touchdowns of 55, 50, and 25 yards to push the Dart record to 2-- 5. y i straight incomplete passes under defensive pressure from Highland. The drive netted but 10 yards and used up two of Davis three precious time outs. When Highland took over the ball with 1:41 remaining. Coach Tom Kingsford could finally relax. If I were to use one word to describe our performance, it would be gutsy, said Kingsford. We had to play hard. Davis is a great team. But we played hard when we had to. We did what we had to do to win. The Rams looked like they would dominate the game offensively early. On their first play from scrimmage. Cannon threw a pass to Gary Langston which covered 57 yards and around the right end and then saw him lateral the ball to Sorensen just before being tackled. The lateral came well down the field and Sorensen went untouched 55 yards into the end zone. Cannon kept the ball on the option play again, this time to the left and he ran into the end zone for a two-poiconversion and a 14-- 7 Highland lead. It took 14 seconds for Davis to answer. Actually it was Dart kick returner Dixon Brown who answered. He took the kickoff, broke through the Jared Steele for a 49 yard completion to pickup the first down and dampen the Davis comeback hopes. It was that kind of game for the Darts so close but never quite close enough. When a Highland fumble by Brandon Sorensen gave the ball back to the Darts with four minutes remaining in the game, Olsen earned one first down with passes to Mike Dedecker and Josh Godfrey, but then threw four 7-- 6. to the Darts who chased Cannon nt RAM CHARGER: Davis junior Brad Chatterton and express Friday night in Kaysville. Unfortunately, it pack at about the 25 and raced 97 yards for a touchdown. Morgan added the PAT and the score was knotted at company managed to slow the unbeaten Highland wasnt enough to prevent a 23-1- 7 setback. goal. The third period belonged to the Rams almost literally. Highland had the ball for nearly 11 of 12 minutes, and all but two plays. Sometimes that happens, said Kingsford. We moved the ball well on the ground during that period. Yet the Rams ended that quarter without scoring. Highland eventually settled for a line drive field goal by Hathaway as the final period began. Weve talked about this before, said Dickson. We just havent gotten 14. Highland found another big play in its bag during the next series to regain the edge. Cannon connected with Sorensen for a 50 yard strike down the east side line. Davis J. D. Evans, who had an outstanding game defensively for the Darts, blocked the PAT attempt Davis closed the gap to 20-1- 7 after the first half had already officially ended with a Morgan field 20-ya- rd the breaks when we needed them. Maybe well get them in the tournament. For Dickson, the light is still shining. Davis took its only lead of the game midway through the second period when Olsen scored on a one yard quarterback sneak. Chris Morgan hit the extra point to make it The scoring drive actually began late in the first period and was fueled by key Highland errors. Starting from their own 14 yard line, the Darts moved the ball to midfield, where they faced a fourth and 12 situation, but a roughing the kicker penalty against the Rams gave the Darts another chance. Seven plays later, it was a pass interference call against the Rams that kept the drive alive and moved the ball to the Highland seven yard line. Three plays later yet another pass interference call gave them a first down at the three. Pass interference was a popular call all night. Highland answered the Davis TD with one of its own on the next series.
