Show CUPPER Friday, September 24, 1 993 1 Outdoors - Deer hunters will soon head for the hills weeks from tonight, of Utah hunters be making their annual migration to the hills for the Utah deer hunt. For some, the next four weeks will be filled with preparation and anticipation. Others will let them quietly slip by, then suddenly realize that they are going hunting avoid the frustration of not being able to hunt on the only Saturday of the hunt, by getting your license early. Over the next few weeks there will be special sales on hunter orange clothing. Dont pass up the opportunity to shop early while there is a good supply of clothing in the stores. Trying to find hunter orange clothing the night before the hunt can be a frustrating experience, especially if you are extra large and the only sweatshirts left on the shelf are small. Right now is the time to break in your new pair of hunting boots. I always marvel, as I am going stand on the through a check-onight before the hunt, when I see someone buying a new pair of boots to be worm hunting the next morning. I dont envy that poor fellows feet. His new boots will have him crying in agony before the day is through. Sore feet thoroughly dampen the desire to seriously hunt. When you first get a pair of boots, start by wearing them around the house for a couple of hours. Each day add an additional hour to Four UTAH OUTDOORS By Mike Hemingway in the morning and dont have a thing ready. If you want to be successful on the hunt, you can use the next four weeks to your advantage by preparing and planning. The first thing you should do is get your hunting license and deer tag. This year, a change in the law allows you to buy a deer tag at any time, but you cannot hunt on the ut day that you purchase the license or tag. If you put off buying your tag until opening day, you legally cannot hunt until the next morning, so . the wearing time. This will allow the materials in the boots to conform to your feet without causing blisters and pain. You will soon learn if the boots fit properly, and if you need to wear an extra pair of socks to keep them snug and comfortable. Once they have begun to break in, you can wear them while doing your weekend chores and on short hikes. By the time opening day rolls around, they will be comfortable to wear and well fitting. Your feet will thank you. The most significant preparation you can take care of in the next four weeks, is to sight in your rifle. Earlier this week I drove up to the Lions Club Gun Range in Bountiful and found that only a couple of people were using the facilities. Experience has shown that in the next couple of weeks the range will get very busy and it will be difficult to get a shooting bench or use a spotting scope. The ideal time to go to the range is in the early afternoon, so it might be wise to take off from work to shoot your rifle. Many hunters shoot a few rounds through their rifles to get them sighted in on paper, and consider themselves ready to hunt. To be a successful hunter, the best practice take place in a safe area where the ranges are not specifically marked and the conditions resemble what you will find in the field. I have yet to see a deer stand broadside, holding a marker that says 100 yards, patiently waiting while I set up a concrete shooting bench with sandbag rifle rests. This never happens in the field, so make sure some of your prehunt shooting resembles practical hunting situations. After you have sighted in at the range, find a safe area and practice shooting while standing, sitting, in the prone position, and any other possible situation. Shoot at targets placed at various unmarked ranges. This type of practice will greatly improve your chances at taking a deer. And finally, dont overlook the need to be in good physical shape. I dont think that a full blown conditioning program will help you now if you have spent the summer lounging around, but even if you cant get in top physical shape in the next four weeks, any exercise will help. Start by doing some walking. If you are planning on hunting the hills, it wouldnt hurt to take some short hikes on the weekends. Park your car a couple of blocks from work and walk. Climb the stairs instead of taking the elevator. Take an evening stroll and enjoy the beautiful fall weather. Any exercise you can do now will be helpful when you hit the trail on opening day. And as always, consult your physician before you undertake a strenuous physical exercise program. Truly enthusiastic hunters will spend time over the next few weeks scouting their hunting areas, preparing their equipment, and ho their skills. If you dont hav me to spend days in the field, yc , can still improve your hunt by getting some exercise, sighting in your rifle, and breaking in your new hunting boots and clothing. Starting now will insure a more comfortable, enjoyable, and perhaps even successful hunt in four weeks.
