After reaching the state championship game a year ago and advancing to regional play in Arizona, the Viewmont Auto- motive baseball team is once again making headway. The Vikes opened the 1993 state tourney Saturday with a 16-- 3 victory over highly-toute- d Highland at Ken Price Park in Murray. These kids just smell the tournament. They know what to do, said Viewmont coach Roger Farnsworth. Highland is a very good team. We didnt beat a patsy. Both squads entered tournament play with 13-- 3 records. Its been a good summer, Farnsworth added. Were just trying to cap it off. Viewmont faced Granger, a 1 upset winner over Mountain View, Monday (results were not available at press time) in the quarterfinals of n the event which concludes this weekend. The two finalists in the 40th annual tournament will advance to regional play at Loyola Marymount University in California in August. After Saturday weve got good momentum going into this week, said Farnsworth. I believe in them. Few could argue after View-mon- ts opening round win over Highland. Every player who entered the contest had a hit for Viewmont. The Vikes had 17 hits en route to fleecing the Rams. Its tournament time and thats what we play for, said Farnsworth. They are very experienced and they know what it takes at crunch time. Viewmont scored three runs on five hits in the first inning to take the lead for good. Troy Beckman scored two with a double, while McEwan Benders single drove in the other Viewmont run. However, Highland closed the gap to 2 entering what proved to be the decisive second inning.
