The death of Ken Price in Salt Lake City last week brings back to memory a gangling, hard throwing right - handed pitcher who used to come to Helper as a member of the Pinney Beverage Legion play League leading Provo flattens Carbon Post By WALTER BORLA Sports Editor Provo fattened its league lead in District American Legion play Friday night at Helper by shutting out the Carbon Post The victory pushes team, Provos record to only a loss to Pleasant Grove marring a perfect record while Helpers record stands at Two games are on the slate for the Helper ball park this week, Orem coming to town for the second time this year Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. game, and the 4-- 5 10-- 0. 7-- 1, 2-- 6. strong Pleasant Grove nine making their first appearance here Friday night, again at 7:30 p.m. Provo scored three runs in the top half of the first inning of south paw Kevin Asay before the left hander settled into a fine pitching duel with Provos Paul Francom. The visitors broke loose for two runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth, however, to cut the game short on the nine - run rule. An error on the very first batter of the game, a walk and a triple by Provos Brett Downing got Asay in the hole at the outset. A single by Ted Thomas scored Downing before Asay retired the side on an infield grounder and a -- strikeout. Asay limited the three innings before two bases on balls to start the fifth spelled the end of the three innings of shutout ball he hurled after the initial frame. Jeff Murray finished up in the sixth when two more Helper errors did little to help the home cause. Asay is still having control problems, walking nine while he was on the mound. He actually deserved a better fate for his Friday night performance as Provo only got seven hits and Helper committed four costly errors. He had little offensive help from his team - mates as Francom scattered five Helper hits, all singles, over the six innings of play. Francom allowed only one Helper runner to reach as far as third base, this in the first inning when Brett Denny led off with a single and moved to third on a Provo error. Denny was cut down at the plate on a fine throw from the Provo shortstop after fielding Dave Maynarichs little experience and quickly developed into one of the leagues finest pitchers who played for the love of the game. He was good enough to warrant a contract with the Boston Red Sox organization but arm problems cut his pro career short and he was back in Utah and involvement in the Industrial League once again before long. After the war Price turned his attention to the youth baseball programs in the state, some of them such as Little League, just developing, and others such as the American Legion program, long in existence. It was Price and the late Bill Coltrin who came to Carbon County in 1952 to encourage the organization of the first Little Leagues in this area in Price and Helper. Later as the move was made to WBBA under the guidance of Coltrin, the Salt Lake Tribune sports writer, Price had moved his attention to the older American Legion program in the Salt Lake area and directed a great deal of his time to the construction of the baseball park in Murray tailored to high school and American Legion play.
