The chart scanners are connected to a Raytheon RD 500 computer which has sensors on the wheels of the car. The sensors pick - up eight conditions of the track right - of way. Such conditions as rail flex and the relationship of dimensions between the two rails are checked. Besides using the rail car, which is towed by a locomotive, Martinez does inspections by U automobiles and small rail speeder carts. Speeder carts are small motorized cars which can travel at about 25 miles an hour on rails. Besides Martinez and the company inspector are five employees who work for a private contractor firm which cares for the computer. The car is one of three constantly in use in the United States, Martinez said. Beth Seagull, an administrative assistant working for the FRA in Washington, said that there are more than 70 rail inspectors working in 40 different states. She also said the DRG&W has a well - maintained track and a very good safety record because of its amount of profits. A railroads safety record is of course connected to its maintenance efforts. Those efforts are directly proportional to its profit margin, Seagull said. National Homo vf John Martine?, federal railroad inspector, takes a breather after surveying the condition of the main line track between Helper and Grand Junction. The line is owned by the Denver and Rio Grande, Western Railroad. OQ&grftfo fcsQ Bs&flpDGfta? Ose (Sh&a?
