Show ' 10 Lakeside Review, Tuesday, June 19, 1990 LakesideCommunity Kids can travel to Hogle Zoo By MARGE SILVESTER Since my sister and I were the youngest in our family it wasnt a Lakeside Review columnist Not too long after the school year ends, parents begin to hear sounds of discontent and boredom as their children search for entertaining activities that, hopefully, wont cost Mom and Dad much money. For us, as children, there was , always the beach. And we went every chance we got, both for summer fun and to escape the 0 degree heat and humidity . of about the same percent. A subway train ride followed by a short walk took us to two beaches, Carson and Wollaston. Travel to Revere Beach was a lit-- tie more complicated. It involved walking to Central . Square where we took the subway to Park Street Station. - 80-9- ' , There we would get a transfer for the trolley car, which took us to the last stop, which was Reand all for a dime. vere Beach Finances usually dictated our choice of beach for the day. If we problem for us, but we empathized with our friends who did tend their siblings. BsfJly Memories didnt have much money, or wanted to see the seals and fish, we would go to Carson Beach where the aquarium was located. other occasions, we would our resources and head for Revere Beach and the amusement park where numerous ice cream and other food stands On pool were located. The beach decided on, the next decision the group of eight to 20 youngsters discussed was how to avoid taking the younger dren, with younger defined as brothers and sisters 2 years or more younger than we 9- - to grown-u- p chil- With permission given by parents, we scrambled to get ready. While one made sandwiches and gathered towels, a blanket and swimming suits, the other would dash over to Charlies Grocery Store to purchase drinks, Hostess cupcakes and a candy bar. With the speed of lightning, we would hurry and pack everything, hoping to get on our way without the dreaded admonitions. But no! From somewhere in the house our mother would sense we were ready to leave. And the scene that took place in our home, we knew was being repeated in our friends homes. As we inched our way to the door, anxious to leave, our mother would admonish us, Dont go in the water for one half-hoafter eating; keep your shirts on, except when going in the water to ur avoid sunburn; and dont go out in the water too far! To show we were being properly attentive, we nodded our head until we frit they would fall off, our only comfort being that our friends were doing the same thing. A final hug and a kiss from our mother and we were off. Arriving at the beach, our blankets were spread out on the sand, we swam and played in the cold ocean water. We built sand castles, played tag or looked for shells and starfish along the shore. We lay out on our blankets and looked for pictures in the clouds as they passed overhead while we munched on our lunches. Dinner time was our signal to leave the beach. Reluctantly, we shook sand out of blankets and towels as we prepared to go home. We were a tired and sunburnt, but happy group as we made our way to the train station, full of stories of the days events, as well as plans for the next beach trip. Let children take turns Let kids, trees branch out on their own topple it. By SHARON NAUTA STEELE Sometimes I wish Id just planted it along the fence and let it do its own thing. It would have still been very beautiful, and I wouldnt have to fight it so Lakeside Review columnist What kind of tree is that? my friend Golda asked the first time - she saw the magnificent wysteria that graces my front lawn. - Actually, it isnt a tree, Its a vine. But it looks like a tree! Only because Ive supported it since it was planted. See that heavy iron stake its leaning on? Then theres the pruning. The thing about that wysteria is that no matter how many times I say You WILL be a tree,' it keeps on trying to be a vine. I have to go out every week or so and cut off all the little shoots much.
