Show Lakeside Review, Wednesday, Nov. 15, 1989 LakesideCommunity Polio didnt erase victims smile By DARLENE MIX Lakeside Review columnist I first met Lawson in the seventh grade. In math class he sat in the row in front of me. From his chair each class period he would turn around, look at me and wink. He always wore a cheerful grin. To me a part of math class was seeing Lawson, his wink and his smile. Lawson never missed school that year, that is, until the following spring. With each new day, I was sure I would find him sitting back at his desk, but it remained empty, and I was missing his cheerful' smile and that wink of his. About two weeks later the teacher announced to the class 3 LAYTON iented that Lawson was very ill with po- , lio. Expressing sorrow and to offer comfort the class made Lawson cheery cards. Another student and I took the envelope of cards to his home. His sister answered the door and it was then I learned that he was in an iron lung. It was later learned that the disease had en us. By then I was a young mother. He arrived in a small foreign car that was I hand-equippe- d. greeted him in front of our home. And, there he was wearing the same cheerful grin I remembered from seventh grade. After much effort with his leg braces and crutches he made his way into our home. He wanted to share his happiness. He was getting married. In addition to the dozens of tablet supplements, consumers can buy calcium-enriche- d milk, grapefruit juice, soda pop and breakfast cereal. As with other health trends, there has been a backlash. Recent research is suggesting that supplements may not work for all women. . There is no evidence to suggest that women should stop taking calcium supplements, but some research indicates that calcium supplements alone are not the answer to preventing osteoporosis, said Art Mahoney, nutritionist in the Utah State University college of family life. He explained that recent research indicates that some women in their s may need estrogen treatment along with calcium supplementation to prevent osteoporosis. Also, taking large doses (more than 1,000 mg per day) gives no added benefit over taking just the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of 800 mg per day, he said. The bottom line for older women is that supplementation may have benefits but there is no guarantees, he said; Mahoney said the best precau mid-40- tion against osteoporosis is to start taking calcium in early adulthood ( 7 years old and up). The RDA of 800 mg is fairly easy to get in a diet that includes dairy products. For those who eat 1 few dairy products, moderate supplementation is advisable. For those who decide to increase the calcium in their diets, Mahoney offers these tips. If you are going to take a 500 mg per day calcium supplement, it is best to spread it out over two 250 mg doses. This increases the likelihood that your body will absorb more of the calcium. Acidic juices such as orange and grapefruit enhance the absorption of calcium. I wondered why this misfortune had to happen to such a friendly person as Lawson, especially at his young age. In the 1940s and 1950s polio was a devastating epidemic that paralyzed or killed thousands of Americans. I can still remember the fear of polio. It would usually strike its victims during warm months with beginning symptoms such as sore throat, fever, headache and muscle stiffness. It was a crippling viral disease and at that time there was yet no cure. Years later when Lawson was free of hospitals, he came to visit THE BON MARCHE, WE'RE FIGHTING FOR VOUR LIFE WHERE THE CHOICES ARE CHARGE IT ON YOUR BON, VISA, MASTERCARD TO ORDER BY PHONE: CALL OR AMERICAN EXPRESS ACCOUNT.
