Show Lakeside Review, Wednesday, Nov. 15, 1989 4 LakesideOpinion Religion's place in the American education system is a question every one puzzles over but no one wants to address. Until now. v i A v ! 4 y s Street talk - ; v During the past year Davis school board member Raymond Briscoe has tried to change all that by forming a coalition of educators to see whether a class in the history of religion would be acceptable in junior high and high school. Briscoe, a researcher for the LDS Church, has pulled together a group of educators to organize a program to overcome what he calls Utah students' limited understanding of the principle of religious freedom and the role of religious diversity in American culture and history. Briscoe formed the Utah Coalition for Religious Freedom in Public Schools as a voluntary group dedicated to the maintenance of religious freedom through public discourse and education. Briscoe has said he is adamant that children need to understand why religious freedom is important in American life. In an earlier article in the Briscoe was quoted as saying, Religion should not be shoved under the rug. A very special thanks to you who voted for me. It is nice to have a feeling of real support for those for whom you will serve. I hope we can all unite and bring our city to where we would like it to be. Thanks for a 58.9 percent turnf out. That is a good sign of nonapathy and this is what we need. Let us know at the city of your concerns and we will strive to do things right. Eugene R. Kidd Sunset Job Corps story inaccurate reporting Lakeside Review editor: I see that Channel 4 is witch hunting again by their Sunday, Nov. 5 presentation targeting Job I Corps as being responsible for Gangs in Utah. It seems like the same style of reporting done by some of the less credible tabloids we see in stores, Aliens r Meet With Congress, and so on. It leads me to wonder if we will be subjected to the same style of investigative reporting as - done by Ms. Hamilton, July 1987, when Channel 4 was reporting, in my opinion, in a most biased, incomplete and negative manner, on the same subject. Ms. Hamilton came to Job Corps and was given an open door policy to tour and interview at will. She did interview many students, but chose to use an interview with one student, who apparently, as was later discovered, was so overwhelmed at being in the presence of a celebrity, told her things he felt she wanted to hear and attempted, and succeeded in impressing her with a fabricated history of I L s.Q BARN K ((gallery CALENDAR OF EVENTS A Day To Honor LeConte Stewart Nov. 25 10 AM to 5 PM CHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE Dec. 7 & 8 10 AM to 9 PM t j - , Entire Family All Limited Editions And Poster Prints It c f Join U For A Fun Furtive Time t; 56 NO.
