The Kavsville Rotary Club has been given permission by the city council to sponsor a program that is intended to make students aware of the government process. The idea is to have them (the students) participate, not hear lectures, said Harold Gailev of the Rotarv. first-han- INSURANCE Call us today for a free personal rate quotation. Fair shows how-to- s of home business KAYSVILLE The spirit of Christmas will once again become alive at the second annual Christmas Fest Craft and Home Enterprise Fair being held this month. Davis High Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) will again host nearly 100 different craft and home businesses at the fair on Friday, Nov. 24 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 25 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Anyone with an original product, a craft or a home business interested in information on renting a booth in the fair may call 544-259- 0. Last year's Christmas Fest e took honors at both the state and National FBLA conventions when reported as a Partnership in Business Project by club members Jewelene Hartley, Loren Mansell, John Steele and Janelle Wooley. In exploring the value of this type of event to the local economy it is interesting to note that several of Utah's major businesses started in somebodys basement. Home business also provides mothers the option of staying home with their children and maintaining the time control and flexibility a family requires while still contributing financially, said Laura Savage of The Home Enterprise Network. Savage professionally organizes the fair in cooperation with the FBLA. Where zoning laws and family life often make it undesirable to attract people to their homes to buy the things they make, the fairs offer a marketplace with a larger draw than any individual home business would have, said Savage. She also mentions the first-plac- benefit of cooperative advertising. Savage emphasizes the value of such fairs by recalling the birth of a thriving business in Hyrum. The Booster, currently owned by Jenny Bywater, has doubled in size every year and last year generated over $260,000 in mail order and convention sales. This business started with an original game Savage was marketing from a craft fair booth which she shared with another home business owner who sold d necklaces. This business owner also went on to market the necklaces all over the United States, said Savage. Alberta Bodrero will be displaying her custom seat covers and clothing bags at the Christmas Fest. She is the key figure in another story of the explosive growth which is possible with the right mix of industry, initiative and innovation, said Savage. Alco Seat Covers, which was sold to Saddleman, currently employs 475 people and has an estimated value of several million f dollars, she said. It all started with one sewing machine and two pair of scissors in the basement of a horqe. Bodrero was one of four women who took turns on the machine. She came up with the innovative ideas for making saddleblan-ke- t seat covers fit more snug. She acquired patents on three of her hand-painte- Both pieces superb tailoring VISIT OUR BARN Drastically reduced furniture Adjacent to main showroom Hundreds of yards to choose from. When the business was sold to Saddleman Seat Covers for $3 million Bodrero signed a contract not to make seat covers or bags for five years. Now that time has passed and she is making custom seat covers in her own basement with both saddle blankets and a more luxurious velvet cover.
