Show A forum for opinion i Wednesday February 18, 1S87 In his proposed budget Gov. Norman Bangerter has found savings of nearly $2 million annually by reducing the number of children who are bused to and from school. His proposal would allow buses to pick up children who live three miles or further from school. At the current time children who live two miles or more away from school are bused. The children and parents affected by the savings proposal live in that doughnut-shape- d ring around each school. Davis County School District transportation specialist Dick Butler said the district would save $330,000 by reducing 23 bus routes. To check the pulse of the community the Lakeside Review asked if the savings proposal was a viable solution to the states budget woes and yet still serve the needs of the public. As a follow-u- p question residents were asked if they would be willing to pay an busing fee and how much that would be. out-of-poc- Julie Harmer, Layton Thats a real toughie. My son right now takes a bus and I wouldnt want to have to take Street talk beyond or live on a busy street I think they should bus them. Sure Id be willing to pay a fee. You carpool to work, like from Layton to Ogden and pay $5 or $10 a week so Id say no more than $10 a month for busing a child to school." It Paul Patane, Kaysville sounds like it would save money. But I dont know if thats the real point. The point is should the children have the opportunity to be bused or not to be bused. As a taxpayer Id rather see my money spent on busing than on say, maybe something else. I heard on the news they were talking about combining school districts. I dont know if that would save Davis (District) any but they ought to look at doing something like that. They should look at reducing some of the overhead, reducing some of the top management people for saving money. I know its a real problem because our kids live right on the borderline right now whether they can get bused or not be bus-rid- er him to school every day. And Im bused. sure hed have to walk. So Id think its dumb. where we live (to the stop) and if If the kids live two miles and they go up there and there is two-mi- le Julie Harmer Paul Patane room for them to ride then they ride. Quite often we end up just driving them. Theyre able to ride the bus about half the time. I personally would (be willing to pay a fee). Maybe other people wouldnt but I would. Id rather see them get to school and get there on time. Then when the bus comes back they could get dropped off at the regular place and get home on time. Id be willing to pay maybe 25 cents a day per child. Thats fair. I Virginia Dowden, Layton dont think it is (a viable alternative.) Myself, like many other citizens, see our youth as our future and feel they need recreational activities with other things, a few times per week, to help them handle the pressures they face daily. It is really hard to believe that the Mayor and Council cannot lend enough support to these programs to keep a Recreation Board that has done an outstanding job. These men donate all their time and energy creating good programs for all those who want to participate, and recruit many others to donate their time and expertise at no cost to the city. Yes, Ron Osborn receives a small salary for himself and his wifes endless effort, but unfortunately, it probably would only cover his phone bills at the end of the year. We read last week Councilman Redd was quoted as saying he believes the city should form different committees for each sport, make the committees independent. Councilman Tennant was quoted, During the last several months the council has been looking at organizing Board Committees made up of parents who have children involved in the program. We have comments to both of these statements. First, in reference to Mr. Tennants comments. Weve had a committee made up of parents with children in the program for the past five years. As a result of that we have the best recreation program in the state. In reference to Mr. Redds comments, we had several different committees for each sport five years ago and the program was weak, resulting in many of our youth participating in other communities programs.
