In a meeting held last week, board members discussed whether to allow Layton High School officials to accept the donation of a $15,000 football scoreboard from the Coca Cola bottling company, which reads Coke is it. Bonnie Durrance Doyle said the offer by the major soft drink company to install a scoreboard at Layton High, bearing the n logo, was discussed the board and the administraby tion and will be accepted. Doyle said the recent discussion also prompted the board to the future of its strict commercialism policy. The current district policy does not allow commercial groups to advertise through the schools, allowing students not to be inunBoard dated with advertising unnecessarily, said Associate Superintendent Gayle Stevenson. However, Stevenson did show his support of accepting the scoreboard offer. The need for the money is desperate, Stevenson said referring to the trimmed education budget, and schools are looking for sources everywhere. Others also expressed their appreciation of the acceptance of the offer. Paul Smith, principal at Layton High said he supports accepting the scoreboard because Laytons current scoreboard is the oldest in the district and that other schools within the state have scoreboards advertising products. We do have a bonafide need for the scoreboard, it is not a luxury or a cosmetic change, Smith said. Smith said he has been told Layton Highs particular request was evaluated by the school district administration and was approved several days after the Tuesday board meeting. Doyle said to resolve the issue 521 TORO DECEMBER REGISTER Gifts deemed appropriate by the administration may be accepted, Doyle said. Davis School District Superintendent Lawrence Welling once again outlined a gloomy picture for education in reflecting on recent budget cuts education has had to sustain during the current school year. Welling, in a recent Davis Board of Education meeting, said in the state legislatures special session Nov. 24 and 25, state lawmakers cut funds to education by 2.5 percent for the 1986 school year, which will amount to more than $15 million statewide. Welling said the most recent cuts will reduce this years WPU (weighted pupil unit) by $13, from $ 1,204 to $1,191, and will bring the Davis Districts yearly reduction up to approximately $1.8 million. The Davis Board of Education, which was earlier in the year targeted for cuts to meet a $1.7 million state shortfall, was requested to take on an additional percent cut last week. of Welling said the amounts to approximatepercent ly $800,000 in revenue. According to Gov. Norman Bangerter the shortfall in the states revenue stems from declining oil prices leading to a decrease in gas taxes, and because of the closure of several of the states major industries. Bangerter in his televsion public address on Monday, Dec. 1, estimated state revenues have fell off by more than $100 million during the year, with similar problems to face the state in years to come. In addressing the cuts, Welling said we need to keep people in mind, whatever we do. Were in the people business," he said. While this is the third we must such cut since 1981-8face the chalenge squarely and do the best we can. In earlier cuts the board has trimmed several programs, which included the vocational budget by more than $100,000, and the Gifted and Talented Program by Polaroid Film Time Zero 50 &22SSS Off & 600 Label Dual Cassette (AMFM Cassette Soundesign 4788 Casio Watches 15 AMFM J Auto Reverse 4036 Toshiba (Q0 0 each sPolariod Time Zero & 600 Film Twin Pack Clock Radio Alarm Clock Casio Assorted Colors ( AMFM Electronic Soundesign No. 3625 Assorted Colors TQ311 I Dual Cassette High Speed Dubbing Magnavox ietip8 each Cannon BASF Triplehead Razor Calculator Calculator Video Tape LC-34- T j 'r a.- - Norelco TP7C Conon 5500T L one-ha- lf one-ha- lf 2, $35,000. 1 each Cassette Tape PMC Audio each fclT 3 pk.
