Show 7B. Lakeside Review, Wednesday, October 8, 1986 ive Ioniser hi DR. GEORGE F. SNELL prevention for recovered heart Review columnist Medical and nutrition newsletters are buzzing with findings of recent research on ways to prevent heart attacks. I for one salute these efforts in preventive medicine. It makes a lot more sense economically to try and prevent heart attacks from occurring through coronary artery blockage than the very expensive treatments of that blockage (such as coronary artery bypass surgery). Lets talk about aspirin first. Medical statisticians have determined that 22 of every 100 victims of an initial heart attack (medically named myocardial infarction) will have a second heart attack within one year. jTL Now dont everyone go out and start popping an aspirin a day. There is not presently any data to suggest that people without heart or circulatory problems will benee fit from aspirin as a preventative. That, too, remains for future studies. Also, perhaps as many as 10 out of 100 people in the general population will not be able to take aspirin because of allergy to the medication, so check with your doctor first. The aspirin seems to work by interfering with the formation of little blood clots that form within the coronary arteries which have been narrowed by cholesterol plaques building up within the walls of the arteries. There is good evidence that people who have increasing angina pectoris (a syndrome of chest pain which tells its victims that the heart muscle is not getting' Family Healt- hheart attacks by more than 20 percent. Low dose aspirin also works in reducing the frequency of strokes in patients who show signs of problems in their arterial circulation to the brain. And now for the fish story. This involves more basic preventive approach, namely that of preventing the buildup of cholesterol plaques within the arteries. In three studies, the amount of fish consumed is directly related to a lower risk of dying from heart disease. I cant believe we have learned so much already, said another student. Charting, combining ingredients for fillings, working in the lab and assisting with periodontal surgery are all part of the day. Two weeks before the classes end, a new group of students are selected and the process begins all over again. The new class is eager and full of questions, but the outgoing students will supply the answers, demonwhile giving strations.. When the class is completed, two certificates of training will be presented, one from the dental clinic and one from the Red Cross. If the same training was obtained elsewhere, it would cost from $1,500 to $1,800. When a dental assistant is needed we usually select from those we have trained, said Staff Sgt.
