The average user has used smokeless tobacco five to eight years by the time they graduate from high school, said Michael Vander Sys, an adjunct professor health at Weber State. Vander Sys, along with assistant professor of health Dr. Gordon B. James, recently finished a three month study among WSC students to determine the prevalence of smokeless tobacco use. The investigation was the result of a grant from the Utah Department of Health, and was conducted to see if there is a need to change health care education. Survey findings show that use of smokeless tobacco, including chewing tobacco and snuff, is up among college students as well as among grade school children, reflecting a national trend of increased use, Vander Sys said. The information indicates that we should be including information about smokeless tobacco in the fourth grade, Vander Sys said. A ouiiiig edny nit; Of the 388 student polled at macho, western image and reach Weber State, 28 percent have or the parking lot crowd, James are currently using smokeless tobacco products. All but six were male, and most were Caucasian. A majority of the 28 percent, listed themselves as experimenters only, with 32 percent citing habitual use, James said. All indications are that its an increasing problem, Vander Sys said. For never-user- s religion, parents, and siblings were the big influences (not to use). For users, the only influence was friends. Religion, parents and siblings had little effect. That is consistent iwith findings around the country, James said. If one person begins using chewing tobacco or snuff, others pick up the habit mostly from a wish to conform, James said. Friends are the most important influence for users, and religion is the most important deterrent, James noted. Tobacco companies are well aware of the effects of peer pressure, and seem to be aiming advertisements at a small segment of youth, James said. Theyre trying to create the said. With the decline of cigarette smoking tobacco companies are looking for areas to expand. They are very effectively marketing smokeless tobacco products to the youth, said Vander Sys. The implied message of those ads is that smokeless tobacco is a safe alternative to cigarette smoking, Vander Sys said. Tobacco companies back those claims citing a lack of scientific data indicating increased cancer from smokeless tobacco. The lack of data is due, however, more because scientists havent had enough long-tersubjects from whom to gather reliable data, than from a lack of evidence, Vander Sys said. Smokeless tobacco is a human carcinogenic, and the dose over time is the equation for health outcome, he said. Gum disease and oral cancer inare the results of short-tertensive use, but scientists dont know for sure what long-terhealth effects chewing tobacco and snuff will cause, James said. m m ses. His hobbies include sports, reading, camping, and horseback ng 4 riding.
