In an era when studies show the health of the average high school student is decreasing at an increasing rate, Clearfield High is working out a plan to shape up the average student body. The kids are snatching, cleaning and squatting themselves into better physical condition. :.i They lift weights. Not just the jocks; this isnt limited to only the gridiron trenchmen. All students at the school are offered the opportunity to take weight training as part of their physical education requirements. More than half now take II aBUI 4 A ( y : t v , a"' a ! ( t . The school has built a weight room with squat racks, flat and incline benches. Universal Gym type equipment, Olympic lifting platforms and somewhere near 7,000 pounds of free weights. Clearfields program rivals that of many colleges. And the best part of the program is everybody who wants to use the weight room gets to use it, said Brent Lund, strength and conditioning coach at Clearfield High School. Some students may go on to become Olympic lifters, powerlifters or bodybuilders, where lifting weights is an end of itself. But for now Lund is content to see the students improve their physical and emotional health through weight training. You can see the difference in kids after theyve been in here a few weeks. They come in and work out and then they begin to see a change for the better. They look better. They decrease their percentage of body fat, they have better muscle tone and their strength increases. It can really make a difference in the way a student perceives himself. It can he needs to give him the improve in other areas of his life, Lund said. Clearfields weight room is heavily slanted toward free weights, because they are so effective in developing connective tissue, Lund said. Lund has a dozen different programs for his students and even personalizes the workout to the individual, but generally he builds from a base of four lifts: the bench press, the power clean, the squat and the incline bench. Lund likes the Olympic lifts (the snatch and the clean and jerk) because they require true power, which he defines as strength multiplied by speed. We teach kids the Olympic lifts (especially for sports like football) because they require explosive power. Some of the other lifts increase strength, but for most sports, what you need is increased strength plus quickness, Lund said. Clearfields situation is unique to the area. Most schools dont have the facilities or equipment to offer weight training to every student. While building the weight room to its present stature has been no accident, a serendipitous coaching staff found support in principal Lawrence Cook and Davis School District superintendent Lawrence Welling and went to work. The expansion of the weight room began during the summer of 1983, just after Clearfield hiredLund as a sophomore basketball and football coach. Lund, who had competed his masters degree in exercise physiology at Brigham Young University, was called in midsummer by head football coach Brent Hancock, who knew Lunds background. The two went through the existing weight room equipement (which consisted of two Universal Gym type machines, one in poor condition), rearranged it into stations so it could handle more kids, and took notes on what was needed to make the room more complete. Each year the school has added either weights or apparatus to the room. a power clean dur ing a summer workout at Clearfield High.
