Recently Davis County health officials were granted a permit to shoot five birds each day to deter the birds from living at the North Area Refuse District landfill. The landfill is east of the base runway, where the dangers of the birds crossing the flight path of aircraft are apparent. The Lakeside Review readers what they asked thought would be a solution to the problem. Don Marten, Clinton I to- tally agree with the solution. When you have a $10 million to $20 million aircraft all lost because of a bird its ridiculous. Shooting five per day is not sol toon w' i '' ?'" ' Ui '!u $ M I " A v Aa A' - x? You could cover it up (the landfill) and Ive heard that in some places they have used hawks or other predators to scare them away. I had pigeons and a hawk plucked one up and scared the rest away. If the Salt Lake International Airport had the problem and they were knocking passenger aircraft down then theyd do something about it and the same should hold for these planes. Whether its the state bird or not is immaterial. Ruth Mattson, Layton I have no suggestions. I work at Hill and see the need for the Jody Anderson Russ Campbell gulls and killing them is fine with me if they are causing plane damage. It (HAFB) is our livelihood not the sea gulls. I Jody Anderson, Sunset think they should have a nesting ground somewhere so they dont run into the planes. I dont know really what they should do, but shouldn't shoot them. Russ Campbell, Farmington I think they should shoot more than five a day. What are they good for? It's no problem if the birds are causing a problem. What else are you going to do? Youve got to get ridiof Steve Snow planes to fly. Im not in favor of killing birds either. Its a thorny problem. I want to see the birds fly and also not see the planes damaged. The solution escapes me. Steve Snow, Layton I think that shooting is a good solution. We have too many sea them. Hill planes need protection Sea gulls are harmless enough birds and sometimes even helpful. Except, according to Hill Air Force Base offi- cials, when in the flight path of sophisticated aircraft. The official state birds have caused millions of dollars in damage to planes, base officials estimate. If a bird is sucked into the engine of a single engine it can cause the craft to crash, -they say. If a gull goes through the aircrafts windshield, it can harm the pilot. These po- F-1- 6, !n our view tential dangers have been a source of concern for base officials. For these legitimate reasons, Davis County health officials have obtained a permit to shoot up to five gulls a day at the North Area Refuse District landfill, east of the base runway. It is hoped the shootings will deter other gulls from congregating at the landfill. The sea gulls gather at the landfill to feed off the garbage. Other methods to scare the birds from the landfill have been tried, and failed. The landfill is naturally an attraction to the birds, but relocating the landfill to a location more removed from the runway is not practical. The shooting of the gulls may prove to be a viable solution and it may not, but it must be tried, since the loss of pilots lives is the alternative if no action is taken. to the editor Sheriff's Office has high turnover rate . Review editor: Regarding the Lakeside Review article two weeks ago about the Davis County Sheriffs race, there are two areas of discussion that especially need to be clarified. 1. There are 48 sworn deputies who have left the Davis County Sheriffs Office during Brant Johnson's administration. Three retired and the rest have resigned. This figure does not include anyone who died or was fired. 2. Among the deputies who have left, there were two lieutenants, seven sergeants, one corporal, and 16 paramedics. Total service at Davis County.,.289 years. It is true that there are many civilian employees in the department, but only 64 sworn deputies: 48 out of 64 is a very high figure. If he wants to count all the employees, lets count all the resignations! Davis County is in critical trouble and desperately needs a new sheriff. The department has lost many valuable and talented people during this regime. It is time consuming and expensive to train paramedics and police, and the most valuable asset for any department is experience. Several other law enforcement agencies within Utah and in other states are reaping the benefit of Davis County's tax dollars in training and experience. ed sheriff. Blake Jail Chard Layton not substandard, Review editor: As a correctional officer, I deeply resent the inference, made -- by two County officers, that the Davis County Jail is a substandard place to work, and the place where Sheriff Brant Johnson punishes officerswho need to be disciplined. At the present time there are 30 officers assigned to the jail, and of that 30, 24 are professional correctional officers. The other six consist of the jail captain, jail lieutenant, and four sergeants who are deputy sheriffs and currently assigned as shift commanders of the Davis County Jail. Several officers have been placed on temporary duty in the jail due to the overcrowding ex-Da- 24 Years Graduate of National Academy FBI Experience in Law Enforcement there. Sheriff Johnson has attracted high calibre, professional officers to the Corrections Division of the Davis County Jail. Many of us have college backgrounds and are well trained in the corrections field. Certainly, there is stress in the jail, but those of us who work here are professionals and handle it well; and you, the public, can rest assured that we do our best to keep it a safe secure place in which to work or be incarcerated I like working at the jail, and as the administrative sergeant, I work closely with Sheriff Johnson. He is a human being and makes mistakes, like all of us. We do not always agree; but, he is fair. I admire and respect him for the excellent job he is doing. I have been here long enough to see the vast improvements he has made in this department during his tenure as sheriff of Davis County. My vote goes to Sheriff Brant Johnson! Most of the former deputies that have become public with their opposition to Sheriff Johnson were the same deputies who worked in 1978 to unseat former Sheriff Dub Lawrence. 7. As a former sergeant with the Davis County Sheriffs Office, I too have an insight to the situation addressed in the article and would like to list some facts' that may help complete the article. I. I find it interesting that Bob Weller talks of retiring from Office when he was jglking of finding another job when I started there in August of who did. 3. It is true that some deputies left because of ..the way he (Brant Johnson) runs the office, but it is also just true that every one that left, left for their own reasons. These reasons are just as varied and different as there are people that left. 4.
