Eighty years ago such infectious diseases were the major cause of death in the United States. Better sanitary practices, improved social conditions, immunizations and antibiotics have lead to near eradication of many Of those diseases. Diseases leading the list of killers today often result largely from lifestyles, said Brad Neiger, Davis County Health Departments health promotion specialist. Chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer and stroke head the list of Risk factors contributing to the possibility of contracting these diseases can be greatly reduced by the proper choice of lifestyle, he said. As health promotion specialist, Neiger works to improve the quality of life and decrease the leading causes of lifestyle-relate- d deaths through effective planning, education, economic and political strategies designed to facilitate voluntary behavior change. Consunmer health protection is another concern of the department with mass media campaigns employed to alert the public to health fraud or vital health information. Health promotion also serves as a health information resource to the county. Neiger received his masters degree in health science from Brigham Young University and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in the University of Utahs College of Health. In line with that is the Davis Healthstyles program where a computerized health risk appraisal is used to measure specific health risks of individuals and recommend changes.
