In 1981, he was accepted to Pacific University College of Optometry, in Forest Grove, Oregon where he graduated as one of the top ten in his class. While there, lie received extensive training in analyzing, diagnosing, and correcting visual problems. He also performed examinations lor glasses and fitting of He contact lenses completed rotations at Vancouver's Veteran's Hospital in Washington, Grace Peck Public Health Clinic in Portland, and the Portland Optometric Clinic He received training in detecting and diagnosing diseases of the eye.
