FREEMAN'S School Gets Visit From Johnny Appleseed nae Hill, Jayne Barton and Doris CAROL GRAHAM Review Correspondent SUNSET Johnny Appleseed may be just a legend to most folks, but he came alive for the first grade students at Doxey Elementary School last week. An annual event at the school, which includes a ceremonial planting of a live apple tree on the school grounds, was a celebration of the birthday of Johnny Appleseed, and featured songs, dances, and a variety of treats made from apples. ( The classes of Mary Mata, Re- - Fresques worked together on the social studies project and made paper costumes decorated with apple cut-out-s. Dances, songs and poems they had learned were performed for parents at a special program, and included such folk favorites as Jimmy Crack Corn, and The Hokey Pokey. The children were shown an animated film about the legend of Johnny Appleseed, and were surprised and excited as he appeared in real life following the film. Appleseed, they recited together, then burst into song with Happy to You." Colorful Pete Todd, the schools custodian, gave a very convincing performance as Johnny Appleseed, and led the children outside for the planting of the apple tree in the school yard. Birthday As the children gathered around the chosen spot, they listened attentively as Johnny Applesee explained about the young tree and the care it would need. We plant this tree in memeory of Johnny ribbons were tied on the new tree to complete the celebration. The program at Doxey is just one of many programs that make learning fun for the students, according to Mrs. Mata. We do this every year, she said, and it makes a memorable learning experience for the children as they watch their tree grow. In addition to the other activities, the children made a booklet containing worksheets with games, puzzles, quizzes and other CARPET SERVICE ANY 2 ROOMS CLEANED assignments that covered math facts, history, science, reading and writing while studying the apple and Johnny Appleseed. Parents became involved in the project by sharing favorite recipes made with apples and the students had a tasting party sampling such delicacies as apple fritters, apple cake, apple crisp, apple pie, apple suckers, candied and carmel apples, apple cider and apple juice, dried apples, and apple cookies, to name a few.
