Season recap by Gary Warren The Payson Lions defended their Region 4 football championship this year in fine fashion. Although the Lions never repeated as champions in the region this year they did compile a very impressive record which was fourth best in the race for the crown. Payson opened their season on October 28. The Lions first met a stubborn Spring-vill- e team and were held scoreless in the first half by an aroused Red Devil defense. The Devils were held in check throughout the game though by a tough Payson line of Kevin Barnett, Gary Cannon, Terry Carter and Gary Montague. The second half saw the Lions move on the ground and ruin any plans for Springville making an upset win over the Lions. Beaty has 163 points for a 23.3 average while Freeman has tallied 162 points for a 23.1 norm. These two were the big guns against the Pros in Memphis Monday night as both hit for 28 markers. Both Beaty and Freeman were held way below their averages by the Rockets Sunday night, but forwards Wayne Hightower and Austin Red Robbins both came through with 32 points to more than make up for the slack. This is what is so great about our club, says Sharman. We are not dependent on just one or two players. On any given night any of our guys is capable of coming through in grand style. George Stone and Willie Wise had two fine nights coming off the bench. Stone, who hit for two consecutive in the late going to assist greatly in the Denver win, tallied 12 points against the Rockets and 14 against the Pros. Wise garnered 10 and 14 tallies in the pair of three-pointe- Monday night. Coach Bill Sharman is elated that his club has continued its winning ways on 1 the road, posting a win over Denver Sunday and coming up with a 0 victory over Memphis Monday. Zelmo Big Z Beaty and Donnie Freeman are locked in a tight battle for team rs wins. Deltas Rick Bishop kicked off for the Rabbits and the ball went to Chad Smith who returned to the 22 of Payson. The Lions using Mark Etherington, Mike Daley, and Chad Smith moved the ball to the 31 in three plays but it was short of a first down and Crouch the starting quarterback, punted to Kim Moody of the Rabbits who was dropped on the Delta 30 by JeffPeery and Tim Lafferty. The Rabbits quarterback was Rick Bishop and the Rabbits showed their passing game often but on their first set of downs they were unable to pick up a first down and Delta punted to Brad Olson who returned to the Lion 40. On first down Chad Smith picked up 6 and on second Mike Daley picked up a first down on the 47 of Delta. On the next Tim Durrant broke loose around I lay left end and turned on the speed going all the way for a touchdown. The Lions now with a 0 record took on the Carbon Dinos and Payson took full command of the game to beat the Dinos very convincingly. Steady driving by the Lions gave them the first score with Mike Daley carrying it in for the only score in the first quarter. The Lions were moving again in the second quarter as Mark Etherington took a punt and scampered down the sidelines to the Carbon 20 and a pass to Terry Carter brought the score. With a record the Lions got their first real tough test against Provo. The game became a real defensive battle and neither team was able to mount a sustained drive till the second quarter. The Bulldogs drew first blood with 6:09 left on the clock in the second quarter and Provo took a 0 lead at halftime. The second half was still all defense and the Bulldogs were halted many times on penalties and intercepted passes by the Payson defense. In the fourth quarter Mark Etherington intercepted a Bulldog pass on the Lion 35 and returned to the Payson 39. Then Joel Crouch hit Etherington on the Provo 30 yard line with a pass and Etherington legged it into the end zone. Payson got a field goal opportunity late in the game but it wasnt good and the final score was Payson 7 and Provo 7. The fourth game was heartbreaking for the Lions as the offense had a number of scoring opportunities but couldnt get the ball in for the score. Orem had its chances against the Lions too but could never capitalize until there was only 2:27 left in the game. Quarterback, Larry Chessman drilled a perfect pass to Garth Kenney for a 43 yard touchdown at that time. The Lions suffered their first loss against Orem. The final score Orem 7 2-- 3- -0 7-- 5 & Payson 0. The Lions now after two tough contests had a record of Paysons next contest was against the Pleasant Grove Vikings. A vicious ground attack by the Lions sent the Grovers packing right at first as Payson picked up 4 first downs on a drive and Mark Etherington scored the T.D. Moments later Payson scored again as Gary Weight broke loose and went 65 for the second touchdown. Craig Haskell kicked both of the points good after the touchdowns and the Lions continued to carry the attack throughout the game although Pleasant Grove did put on a fine passing exhibition and scored one touchdown. The Lions scored again just before the half when Crouch hit Terry Carter for the touchdown. The last score of the game came on a pass interception by Dick Armstrong who after he caught the ball went 25 yards for the touchdown. It was a great play for the Payson Junior. The final score was Payson 26 and Pleasant Grove 6. The seventh game of the season was all Lions as Payson rolled up 22 first downs to the Pioneers 9. The Lions moved weU throughout the game and Mike Daley especially made himself known as he ran for 170 yards and scored two touchdowns. One run by Daley was a 67 yarder for a score. The Lions have been very stingy on allowing scores this season and the only score Lehi came up with was a -1. The Lions went to work for another score quickly as Etherington picked up 1 yard on first down and then on second down Joel Crouch hit big Terry Carter with a pass and Carter went in for the score and the extra point attempt by Haskell was good this time. Payson now led 13-- 0 with 3:50 left in the first period. The kickoff by Scott Wilson went to Kim Moody who returned the ball to the Delta 34. Bad luck continued to plague the Rabbits as they suffered a 4 yard loss on first down and on the second play Delta fumbled as an alert Kevin Barnett fell on the ball for the Lions at the 27. The Lions were not able to capitalize safety when a high pass from center sailed over Courchs head and into the end zone when he was attempting a punt. The Lions turned in fine performances by Mark Etherington, Gary Weight, Joel Crouch, as weU as Mike Daley on offense with the whole defensive unit turning in a fine job. The final score was Payson 32 and Lehi 2. The Lions now with a record of had to meet arch rival Spanish Fork in a must game if they were to repeat as champions of Region 4. The game turned out to be what a lot of people thought it would be. It was a hard fought rough battle. Neither team was able to score in the first half and it set the stage for even a meaner second half. Things continued to remain even until Spanish Fork got a big break in the fourth quarter. The Lions had the ball on their 15 when Gary Downey of the Dons broke through to smack Mark Etherington. The ball popped loose and Dave Boyack of the Dons scooped up the ball and ran into the end zone. The Dons nowr led 0. Minutes later Spanish Fork got another break on an interception by John Bingham off Joel Crouchs screen pass. He returned the ball from the Lion 35 to the 10. The Lions staUed the Dons there but a field goal by Max Pletchacher was good and the Dons led 10-- 0. The Lions did finaUy score as Brad Olson returned the kickoff to the Don 40. Crouch completed a pass to weight for 20 yards and marched on down to the goal line on runs. Crouch then took it in on a quarterback sneak. A two point conversion by Etherington running around left end was good and it was 10-- 8 Dons. Penalties and breaks played a big part in the game and the Lions couldnt quite come back. The final score Spanish Fork 10 Payson 8. The loss ruined the Lions chances for Region Championship. The last game of the region season was with American Fork. If Payson was towin this game A.F. would take third place if A.F. won they would take first place. The Lions were now hoping to save a little face and take a big victory with them before going to the playoffs. The baU went back and forth throughout the game with no scores being made by either team until the last quarter. A.F. threatened a couple of times but interceptions by Gary Weight and big plays by Mark Etherington and Gary Brimhall staUed the attacks of the Cavemen. Late in the fourth quarter the Cavemen fumbled on the thirty of A.F. and Gary Brimhall recovered. The lions moved on and Chad Smith on second effort went in for the score but the extra point wasnt good. American Fork couldnt come back and the Lions won 0, As many games were for the Lions this was a game of defense and the Lions had a great team defense the whole year long. That defense and offense will have to be tougher than ever now in the playoffs. Chad Smith carried for a 3 yard gain to start the march. Mike Daley then found a hole and rambled 40 yards out to on held on Delta 25 and picked as the the Delta 30. Crouch now caUed on Etherington who picked up 4, Daley another 2 and it was third and 4 at the 24. Crouch delivered as he hit Gary Brimhall with a bullet pass down to the 17 and a first down. An illegal procedure penalty hurt the Lions but Crouch again came through and threw a pin point pass to Robert Warren down at the 3 for a first down. Donnie Olson then picked up 2. Crouch tried a keeper on the next play and scored with 5:22 on the clock. HaskeUs kick missed and the score was Payson 26 and Delta O. Delta looked like they might be going to put something together as they returned the kickoff to the 34 and picked up a first down on a pass from Rick Bishop to Bruce Curtis down to the 49 of Delta. A couple of plays later Rick Bishop threw to Jon Bishop who made a great catch as he was hit down to the Lion 35. The hopes were wiped 4ut suddenly though as Terry Carter put a hard rush on Bishop just as he went to throw and Gary BrimhaU picked it off at the Lions 32. Chad Smith carried twice starting from and moved up to the 46 of the thirty-tw- o the Lions. On the next play Joel Crouch threw the bomb for Gary Brimhall who caught it and after being hit hard still made it into the end zone for another score. The extra point attempt was good and the score was now Payson 33 and Delta 0. The Rabbits moved late in the half but Mark Etherington made an interception which starved off the attack and the first half ended Payson 33 and Delta 0. The second half was different from the first. Both teams were held pretty well in check. The Lions moved deep into Delta territory early in the third quarter on a run by Etherington but Delta got tough and held at their 19. Delta continued to have trouble moving the ball and again the Rabbits had to punt to the Lions. The Lions again moving the ball on runs by Smith, Durrant and Armstrong moved the ball into Delta territory but a clipping penalty moved the baU back to the Payson 42. Then came the last Lion score as Crouch threw a quick pass to big 212 pound Terry Carter and Carter was off and running down the sidelines. One Delta man, Scott Christensen had a good shot at Carter but when he tried a body block he bounced off of Carter and the tough Payson end galloped over the goal line. The extra point attempt was good by Haskell and the score was 40-- 0. The last score came with 2:24 left to play in the third quarter. The Rabbits returned the kickoff back to but the Lions again stopped the Rabbit drive and Delta punted into the end zone. The Lions now shuffled playoffs 'in and out of the line-u- p giving everyone a chance to play. Delta threatened again in the fourth quarter but again Mark Etherington intercepted and finished the Rabbit chances of scoring. The final score was Payson 40 and Delta 0. The win gives Payson a semi-fin- al game with Richfield Friday at 1:00 oclock at the Payson High Field. The winner of this game will meet either Dixie or Judge Memorial for the Class A Championship. mid-fie- ld |
