Already licensed drivers in Utah County are advised that the next Defensive Driving Course in their immediate area will start on Tuesday, June 2, 1970 at 6:30 p.m. in the Provo High School, Room Al-- 1. Drivers who havent had training in several years, Johnson said, are good, normal drivers. Unfortunately, he added, that just isnt good enough for the demands of todays traffic. The Defensive Driving Course, he stressed, isnt intended to teach novices how to manipulate the controls of a car. 'But, it is designed to give drivers a new understanding of safe driving practices an understanding in keeping with the most modern concepts of traffic accident prevention, Johnson said. The Defensive Driving Course is one of the most important community services which can be provided the drivers in Utah Council Tact speaker Katharyn Iwanowski, now an American citizen, was born in the Ukraine. She lived there during the brutal Communist takeover of her homeland; she was even imprisoned in a German war camp. But she finally managed to escape the nightmare, which had been her beloved country. She will speak before a public audience in Payson on June 4th at 8:00 p.m. at the Payson Senior High School. Her subject will be America is Wonderful." America is wonderful," says Mrs. and being an American is Iwanowski, the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. Just to be here, to enjoy freedom under God, and to know that no secret police will come to take me away in the middle of the night is like a dream come true. Mrs. Iwanowski survived the terrible Communist subjugation of the Ukraine during which millions of people, including children, perished. 'The Ukraine, she explains, was a rich farming country. But the Communists took our food away." After being imprisoned for two years by the Germans and spending another five years in a displaced persons camp, Mrs. Iwanowski came to the United States in 1952, and earned her American citizenship in 1958. Though she had only a second-graeducation, she soon taught herself English with the help of an English Bible. She wanted to describe her experiences under Communist rule to others, and she immediately began speaking before high school audiences near her home in Iowa. Mrs. Iwanowski felt compelled to speak out, she explains, because Americans do de A From the desk of the Superintendent ROUND THE CHRONICLE Evans Smith Clerk candidate L. Ive long since forgotten the problem I had but I still remember his answer. He blamed everything on to the other political party. I was tempted to write to the Senator of the other party, but I was afraid that Id become more confused than normal But heres a few questions I wish someone would answer for me:l. What has the United Nations Organizations accomplished in the last decade? 2. What do they talk about in the Paris Peace Talks? 3. How many casualties has England, France, Canada, Mexico, etc. etc. suffered in the Vietnam War which is supposed to have for its purpose the stopping of the spread of Communism. Our boys and the South Vietnamese are the only ones I hear of dieing out there. 4. 1 read somewhere that this war is costing a billion bucks If this be so, how much is a per day. real war gonna cost? I suppose we shouldnt tax our little minds about such trifles. 5. This question should go to some spiritual giant. How can a feller get enough money ahead to put two years of food away when hes having a hard time paying last months grocery supply bill? You know what I should do for a is to register quarters schooling at the University of Utah and learn a lot of nasty words and then come home and write a nasty book. Probably make enough dough so I wont have to ask any questions of anyone. Most of the rich guys I know never ask any questions. Sold my deep freeze recently; got tired of hearing the thing humming away cooling off the empty shelves. Im still walking past the meat counters in the markets, quoting my favorite passage of scripture that is found in the 89th section of the Doctrine and Covenants: Yea, fleh also of beasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; neverless they are to be used sparingly; and it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold or famine." Just read in Parade Magazine that we taxpayers have just put out $60,000 for a windscreen for President ''ixutis swimI dont kn what a windming pool. screen looks like but 1 hate paying for it while my deep freeze hummed away cooling empty shelves. Im glad though that the President got rid of a couple of yatchs. I could never understand why a president of anything needed three yatchs. I do not make it a practice of writing such a confusing column, but havent you found these are confusing titne- and people are running all over the lace. I may as well join em. - area. In addition to the summer school program, the district participates wth the communities in their recreation programs. The district has also agreed to have the school bands participate in community activities during the summer. Community leaders and school personnel have developed guidelines for this participation. The total number of students involved will be between 1500 and 1700 depending on final enrollments. We are sorry that many of the classes filled early and some students were unable to get the classes they wanted, but funds are just not available to offer more classes. One of the solutions may be consideration of some type of year-rouschool I will discuss this in a future Supt. Joe A. Reidhead The main purpose of the summer school program is to provide enriched and exciting experiences for boys and girls, many of which are not normally part of the regular school year program. Over twenty different offerings in such diverse areas as play production, reading, sewing, arts and crafts, French, ballet, nature study, math, sports clinics, aeronautics, electronics, leather craft, lapidary and jewelry making, industrial acquaintances, band, orchestra, etc., are part of the summer offering. Most of these classes were very quickly filled up at the registration held recently in each of the major school areas. Well over a thousand students were eager to take part in these classes. It was disappointing to many that because of reduced funds for this program, some students will not be able to participate in the area of their choice. State funds for summer school this year for Nebo District were cut by over 10 nd article. Brickey Electronics - 274 North 100 West- and Stereo TV from last years figure. The summer program for elementary students in each area is centered around one elementary school to facilitate the participation in the program of students from the outlying areas who will be bussed The schools this year include the in. Sage Creek School in Springville, the Brockbank School In Spanish Fork and the Taylor School in Payson. Students attending these schools may participate in from one to four different programs at these schools. One very interesting aspect of the elementary program is a nature study course in which students and teachers from all three areas will be taking day-lofield trips to the mountains, lakes and other natural features of our area. Forest service and university personnel are cooperating in this program to provide an interesting and informing experience for boys and girls. Secondary programs, more limited in number than elementary due to less demand, are usually conducted in the teachers own school and classroom. However, ' the courses offered are equally interesting to students. Provo Repair Color Experts 373-966- 5 Service the day you call. ng 75 of all sets repaired in the home. 90 day parts guarantee.
